Question Six
Opening sequence evaluation
During construction of the product the technologies I
have learned are;
• Weebly
• Adobe Fireworks (Production company logo and
opening sequence title)
• Cameras
• Google forms (Target audience questionnaire)
• Serif MoviePlus (Animatic and opening sequence)
• SlideShare
• YouTube
Weebly.
I used the internet to display my work on Weebly. This allowed me to create a
platform for all of my work to be exhibited with my process of development
displayed. I created a Weebly account then a website where I set up separate
pages to organise my work in chronological order. This gave me the skill of
creating a website and learning to embed videos. I used YouTube to distribute
my Opening Sequence, this meant that I had to change my video file to
import it to YouTube, and then embed the video from YouTube to my Weebly.
Therefore I learnt how to transfer my videos from different websites and
display my work in a professional, presentable way. Another technology that I
used to show work in a professional way was SlideShare. I used this for my
actors, props, costume and location. To keep it presentable I used a theme for
all of the slides to coordinate, this taught me to keep my work tidy. I also
embedded these onto Weebly which kept that professional appearance.
Adobe Fireworks.
I used Adobe Fireworks to create my production company logo and opening
sequence title. For both of them I started with a white background; I then
used 1001fonts to find a font that suited my vision. I typed the title I wanted
in the text box, for example ‘W.A.T.M Pictures’. I then copied and pasted this
text onto fireworks and edited the font to my liking, using the fireworks tools
like embossing and shadows. I used the embossing to make the title look like
it was it is in the ground, so I chose the tool and turned up the percentage to
50%. The shadow tool gave a similar effect, however it created more of a
mysterious look. I added the shadow in the same way that I embossed the
title, this meant selecting the title then ‘add effect’. I then chose the effect I
wanted and altered the perimeters to my preference. This taught me how to
create a professional looking title with an original font.
Camera.
I learnt to use a 720p Camera. My first practise of using the camera was at the
beginning of the academic year; I used techniques like the 180 degree rule, match
on action and shot reverse shot. This taught me the basics of using the camera,
for example recording and making sure that the clips are saved. I learnt a variation
of camera angles including establishing shot, which shows the audience the
setting of the film. I used this in the continuity task to show the school location.
There is a similar effect with a wide shot, this can show scenery but can also
isolate a subject depending on the framing. During the continuity task I used this
with the intention of showing the surroundings. I also learnt about mid shots,
these allow the audience to see a characters body language, I used this in the task
as a two shot which meant that the audience could develop meaning to the
relationship between two people. I used close-up and extreme close-up as they
give a clear representation of expression for the audience to empathise with a
character, this was seen within the continuity task. I also learnt about racking shot
and POV however I did not use all of the angles that I had learnt as they did not fit
into the continuity task as I used them to reflect the emotion in the scene.
However, I still tried to use a variation in my opening sequence; an example is a
wide shot that I used to isolate the little girl in the scene. This made her appear
more vulnerable to the audience. I also had to move the clips from the camera
onto the computer, so I have learnt how to safely move clips from one device to
another.
Google Forms and YouTube.
Google Forms was the platform I used for my questionnaire. This allowed me
to share my questionnaire and meant that many people could answer the
questions. I learnt how to properly create and distribute a questionnaire, I
used social media to share the form and gain as many responses as possible.
Google forms showed me the responses in a measurable format, for example
pie chart. Pie charts show me a visual representation of the portions of
people that selected each option. This allowed me to easily evaluate my
responses.
I uploaded my videos on to YouTube. This meant that I learnt how to take a
video from Serif MoviePlus and upload onto YouTube whilst creating a title
and suitable thumbnail. I also learnt how to make my video unlisted so that
the link could lead to the video on YouTube. I then learnt how to embed
videos from YouTube onto Weebly.
Serif MoviePlus.
I used Serif MoviePlus to edit my video. This software allowed me to take the
clips that I filmed and edit it them into a final product. I could crop and split
the clips as well as add effects and change the speed. I slowed down the play
speed of some of my clips in the video to create the effect of a flashback; I
also used the diffuse glow effect to create this look. I could add audio clips
onto the software; this meant that I learnt how to pace my clips to fit the
music and therefore further develop my opening sequence overall. Serif
MoviePlus also has a caption device that allowed me to add text onto the
clips, this meant that I could present my titles whilst cropping and fading
them to fit the pace of the clips. I cut the clips to show the audience that the
main character is having frequent flashbacks because of the necklace. Also
cutting the clips to around 3 seconds each time allowed a consistent pace to
be maintained; this time space is enough to give a storyline and build the
tension for the audience. Another feature of the software is the ability to add
JPEG files; this meant that I could add my final title on the end of my
sequence and my production company logo at the beginning.
