QUESTION 5
How did you attract/address your audience?
Does your magazine use conventions from other professional
magazines?
Skyline
Masthead
Main image
Sell lines
Headline
barcode
My media product uses conventions from other professional magazines within my chosen genre of Hip Hop. To do this I have analysed Hip Hop music magazines such as Vibe, primarily front covers,
looking at the use of conventions and from this I have been able to take these conventions and include them on my own magazine e.g. skyline, masthead, main image, sell lines, headline and barcode. As
well as this I had also looked at various other music magazines to find other conventions that are used such as a QR code, issue number and date, subscription links (website/social media) and the price
of the product.
In terms of the main image, I found that a great deal of magazines had mid-shots or close-ups of the artist therefore led me to experiment with taking mid-shots and close-ups; in the end I went with the
mid – shot which is still conventional and also the mise-en-scene of the model was able to be seen more (helps distinguish the genre). Also from my survey results I identified that most people obviously
wanted to see an artist associated with the genre which is what I have done however, a few responses expressed females should be presented in a derogatory way whilst males presented in a powerful
stance – these are common stereotypes of how gender should be presented within this genre as it is expressed through Hip Hop music and music videos. As my target audience is actually females I
decided to subvert this view and present my female models as strong, powerful artists rather than objects and sexual symbols.
For all the text included on my front cover, I have made sure that they are catchy and would be appealing to my targeted audience as these are the main and most important features that are essentially
to grab the audiences’ attention. The masthead is the biggest piece of text on the front cover therefore it needs to be one of the main factors that attract readers then, from there any other texts such as
the headline and sell lines also need to stand out; they should be catchy to grab attention. Additionally I have used fonts that link in with the genre and would also make my product appealing.
Did you choose language techniques, layout design, fonts, colours, locations,
costumes and models chosen to communicate particular ideas to your
audience?
The fonts I have used in my products directly reflect the genre as well as the colors used for text. The mode of address I have used in
informal and colloquial language as this would be most appropriate and suitable for young people.
Location of photographs were taken within the city of East London which is an urban inner city area which signifies the genre very well
and my models are wearing casual urban clothing conforming to the Hip Hop style and, subverting how female artists are portrayed in
Hip Hop. Moreover the clothing also relates to the demographic I have chosen to target styles could be easily replicated by target
audience also as models wearing casual clothing that everyday people as well as artists would wear thus communicating that Hip Hop is
an all inclusive genre that anyone can enjoy and be apart of if they take an interest.
My use of models from a mixture of ethnicities communicates to my audience that my product is all inclusive and making an attempt to
reach out to more people, attracting them to buy as they see they have been represented in the magazine
The colour scheme I have chosen consists of gold, black and white with a complimentary red. These colours are gender neutral as
although I have aimed my product at females I still want to have my product conform to the Hip Hop genre and I think that the colours
that are typically used through out Hip Hop is an extremely strong distinguisher; from TV shows, films, music videos and album covers. I
went for these colours because they are bold, strong and powerful and give my product a sense of strength as well through my use of
colour. Furthermore, I also think that the colours work very well together in a way which is not over powering – I have a well distributed
amount of the colours through out my product.
