Universal Pictures and Entertainment One would be suitable distributors for the film. Universal distributes many big Hollywood films through theaters and DVD/Blu-Ray. They have distributed similar thrillers like "The Girl on the Train". Entertainment One also distributes films theatrically and through home entertainment, TV, and digital formats in countries like the UK and US. They have experience distributing thriller films as well. The film would be released first in theaters through companies like ODEON and Vue, then on DVD/Blu-Ray and video on demand to reach more people.
2. Distributors:
Distributors are media institutions that give out or 'distribute' a media product for example a film
using methods such as, cinema, DVD and blue-ray, and video on demand. There are many
different media distributors that all distribute different film genres in different ways.
Universal:
Universal is a commonly known distribution company that is part of the Hollywood big six that is known for the
distribution of many big and well known films commonly via DVD. It is an American film studio that is owned by
Comcast through the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group division of its owned subsidiary NBCUniversal.
Universal pictures has distributed thousands of films many of which have been thrillers that create a similar
effect on the audience as does my thriller opening, for example 'The girl on the train'. Universal gained
distribution rights of 'The girl on the train' in December 2015, and later distributed the film overseas other than
in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. 'The girl on the train' is a similar film to mine as it creates an uneasy and
also unsure feeling from the audience throughout making Universal Pictures an appropriate film distribution
company if I was to produce and distribute the film. As universal is part of Hollywood's big six it would therefore
be suitable for the distribution of my film as it would be a large blockbuster that would be released into well
known large cinema companies for example the ODEON, and also Vue. Universal commonly distributes films
into large cinemas such as these. My film has a budget of £36,000,000 making it fit into a similar bracket of the
large blockbuster films usually distributed by Universal pictures. My film if produced would be a large
blockbuster film as a result to the relatively large target audience that it holds, allowing Universal pictures to be
an appropriate media institution to distribute my film.
3. Entertainment one:
Entertainment one is another media institution that would be suitable for the distribution
of my film, as it also has distributed other thriller films. Entertainment one is a Canadian
multinational media distribution company and was founded by Darren Throop in 1973,
and distributes media products in a number of ways. Entertainment one is commonly
known for its distribution of film, television and also music making it a suitable media
institution for the distribution of my film.
After the release of my film 'Manor way' in large cinema such as the ODEON, it would be
released onto the TV in which entertainment one would be able to do. eOne films
acquires film content rights and then distributes them across many areas including
Canada, the UK, Spain, New Zealand, and the US meaning it is a suitable company to
distribute my film across the UK and also the US. This company also distributes its films
(eOne) films across a variety of platforms for example, theatrical distribution, home
entertainment such as DVD and blue-ray, TV and also digital downloading services. In
relation to my media product I would want it released theatrically first in cinemas, before
later being available on DVD, before finally available for digital downloading making
eOne an acceptable company for its distribution.
4. How would I distribute my film?
If I was to distribute my thriller film 'Manor way' it would be shown firstly in large cinemas such as the
ODEON, and also Vue, it would later then be released on DVD and blue-ray, before being released via
video on demand in order to make it accessible to a larger range of people. I think that if I was to
produce and distribute my film I would use minimal merchandising as a result to my target audience
being individuals between the age of 15-35. If I was however, to merchandise, I would do it through apps
and games in order to engage the audience with the film previous to its release. It offers little
opportunities to merchandising as a result to the basic storyline, and limited amount of characters
involved, however I would set up promotional offers regarding cinema tickets in order to encourage more
people to watch it. Previous to the distribution of my film I would market it using social media in order to
engage with the younger individuals of the target audience. I would then advertise through TV adverts in
order to engage with individuals of the older audience who might not see adverts through social media.
Websites would also be produced in order to appeal to any older members of the target audience.
Overall I think that Universal pictures and Entertainment one are suitable for the distribution of my thriller
as they have already distributed similar films of similar budgets. They also distribute large blockbuster
films similar to mine.
The budget of my film would be relatively high as a result to the large numbers of methods that would be
necessary for marketing for example creating websites or apps. The actors would also need to be paid
high amounts as they would be well known within society.
