- 2. WHAT IS A DISTRIBUTOR? A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film. This will include providing platforms of the media for home viewing such a DVD, Blu-Ray or onto an internet sharing platform such as iTunes or YouTube.
- 3. CHOOSING A DISTRIBUTOR When deciding on a distributor for our film we wanted to choose something that produced films with similar or relating concepts to our opening sequence, therefore attracting the audiences that would be interested in the contents of our film. We brainstormed films which also contained similar aged characters that consisted of storylines based around action and thriller genres. We came up with twilight as a starting point. We researched into the distributor of twilight and found that it was summit entertainment.
- 4. SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT On researching into summit entertainment we also found out that they distributed Divergent which enhanced our decision to choose this company as it also contained characters similar to the ages of ours which including action and at times elements of thriller. We also found that Summit Entertainment was subsidiary of Lions gate which distributed The Hunger Games. All these films complimented our decision to choose Summit Entertainment due to the similarities between these films and ours. Elements we found in hunger games that were similar to ours consisted of a chase scene this suggested similar storylines and conventions of action which our movie also contained.
- 5. HOW BBFC AGE RATING CERTIFICATES AFFECTED OUR DECISION In addition to the similar storylines, these movies are also rated with 12 certificates in accordance with the BBFC guidelines. Seeing as we also decided to give our film a 12 certificate rating this was looking like an appropriate distributor to choose.
- 6. IDENTIFYING OUR ASSOCIATION WITH SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT To show that we were using Summit Entertainment as our distributor we inserted the introductory logo into the start of the sequence. This enables us to make our association with the company explicit. On seeing this logo the viewers will be able to make links and connections to other films they associate with the company and are as a result able to identify the company and make a judgement on the type of movie/sequence they are about to see.
