QUESTION 2-HOW DOSE
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR
SOCIAL GROUPS
REAL ARTIST INSPIRATION
As well as research to help me model my artists I also looked at other indie
and indie pop artists, in particular Gabrielle Aplin, as well as Birdy, Lana Del
Ray, Lorde and Florence Welch from the band Florence And The Machine. As
all of these artists are part of the indie and indie pop scene so by mimicking
and using their style I am able to represent my social group accurately.
These artists style are distinctively indie and indie pop, artists that anyone
would be able associate to the genre, so gaining inspiration from them
would help me to represent my social group and make my magazine clear as
to the social group that my magazine is being aimed at.
The above slides show my styling of the female solo artist Gabrielle Aplin
and the comparison of my own duo Double ii.
RESEARCH
Before creating my magazine, I completed a lot of research into my target audience from
creating profiles to looking at fashion trends. This included looking at different hobbies of
my audience/social group and what artists and bands they listen enjoy. By doing this
research I was able to have clear audience aims while creating my magazine and tried to
achieve this.
During this research I used the website UK Tribes (http://www.uktribes.com) which sorts
the British youth population and culture into 5 categories and then into more specific sub
categories. By using this website I was able to clearly find and sort my target audience,
which helped me to learn about them and how to create a magazine that would satisfy
their needs.
My audience fits well into the Tribe called “Leading Edge Tribe”. As my magazine is an
indie pop magazine, the Leading Edge Tribe works well as they combine influences and
work well with the other tribes to create their own individual look and style which is
perfect for my magazine. Within the Leading Edge Tribe I am focussing on the DIYers and
Scenesters as they create the music and talk about the music, which fit the audience who
would buy my magazine. DIYers and Scenesters like to be on top of and know all about
the latest trends, even before they become mainstream, so by having Double ii as an up
and coming band I am meeting my audiences needs and relating to the social group
desires.
IMPACT ON ARTISTS
From using my research, I decided I wanted my artists to be individual
however not completely shocking and different, as I feel this would put off
some of my audiences. By using the cardigan’s that tied in with the lipstick
as a statement item of clothing and having the rest of the outfit more simple
and mainstream, a black crop top and denmin shorts, I feel that I satisfied all
ranges of my social group from those more indie to those more mainstream.
As my magazine is an indie pop magazine, the magazine will appeal to a
range of audiences. I also have my duo dressed in stripes and denim jackets
as these are all key features to indie fashion, that are different to the point
they are not mainstream but not so unusual that they will put audiences off.
By mixing statement jackets with more mainstream shoes such as Adidas
Superstars I was able to satisfy all my audiences in a balanced mix.
I wanted my artists to look slick and modern which I feel I achieved from my
photo’s, I wanted my artists to look relatable as well as realistic to the to the
social group I am representing. By having a casual style which is not shabby
or that looks un-interesting I was able to represent my social group.
EFFECT OF ARTISTS STYLING
Due to my models actually being within my target audience age (16&17) this helps to
make my magazine look relatable and realistic for the social group I am representing.
By using more mainstream fashion (the crop tops and shorts) I was able to portray
my artists as fashionable and on trend; this slightly more dressed up look also works
to aspire to my social group as well as representing them. Also using more
realistically affordable brands such as Adidas, which also fit to the indie pop genre
(as learnt from my audience research) help to represent my social group.
The overall effect of my styling across the magazine of being smarter casual,
individual and still on trend represents my social group as those who like to be up to
date however are not afraid to different. They will happily pick and follow the trends
they choose and disregard the ones they don’t like even if everyone else dose. They
styling leans more towards attracting women to the magazine, however the themes
and ideas behind the styling will also attract men who are interested in the indie pop
genre to my magazine.
