The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?

2. Cinematography
The following 2 images above are clos ups of Earl
sweatshirt and my artist J Stylin, in Chum I see lots of
close ups of the artist this is because the director really
wanted to show of the emotions that the artist is feeling
which are being expressed thorugh the lyrics so therefore
what I had thought would be good was to also have close
ups of our artist as I was influenced by Chums
cinematography, They have used lots of close ups when
it comes to a very important part of his narrative.
Another reason why I have used quite a few close ups of
my artist is because I want the audience to see my
artists face, I wanted them to see the expressions as you
can see by relating the 2 images they both have a similar
frown on no smile as what is there to smile about if you
listen to the lyrics. So therefore I have conformed the
use of close ups of how they are used within the music
video.
In these 2 images they are the same shots, they are both
establishing shots. Eminem uses this in Space Bound to
show his loneliness as he walks along this road, this shot
really goes will with the lyrics as he says he's walking
down this road all alone. I have used this as a inspiration
and implemented it within my music video as it starts to
represent my artists loneliness from the start till the
end, by having the audience see my artist sitting there
all alone they should feel sympathy as they will watch
him and listen to the lyrics and see how they relate.
Having a wall in the background and nothing else shows
that he maybe blocked off from the other side of the
world as he cant go back toward the past to change
things. This relates to Eminem's narrative as well as he's
walking down the road and he cant turn back as there
isn’t a way back because it seems to be a one way road
to some place.
In this image I have presented 2 side profile shots. The
first image is from Eminem's Lose yourself, he is right
now rapping about opportunity, How I saw this shot was
in a way that he has a part to him rapping about
something he wants and his facial expressions seem
serious as he’s got the mic close to his mouth. But we
cant see his other half that maybe hidden forever. So
what I wanted to do was I wanted to subvert the moment
but make it more sad and emotional as I also have a side
profile shot of him but instead I had my artist strolling
along and not bothered to use his hands to hold anything
as he feels like he's lost everything.
But the key reason for why I have conformed this shot is
because of the one sided emotion you get from face
because you don’t really see what the other side is
hiding so that could be revealed within the music video
or it can forever be a enigma
3. Cinematography
The image on the left is one of the well known hip hop rap artists B.I.G
Notorious Juicy, in this music video I have analysed that it has a lot of wide
shots of groups of people but the only shot I can conform to is this one of the
man on the left in jail. Again he is obviously going to feel associated and
trapped as he is behind bars, he has no communication with the out side
world, how ever his facial expressions show that he has done something to
deserve where he is now, relating this back to my artist J Stylin remember that
his narrative is more based on feelings and loneliness J Stylin doesn’t look at
the camera instead he's facing the floor like he's given up and is lost, but the
man behind bars is looking directly at the camera with great confidence even
though he's behind bars and looks like he’s still got a lot of possession but
looking at J Stylin behind a stair railing he looks like he's trapped and cant do
anything to help himself, this relates to the lyrics at this point where he says
he's back a week and he's feeling like calling it quits.
4. Mise en Scene
What I am trying to show is how we have used
setting, by taking inspiration from the video we
are trying to recreate Chum, I have screen shot
the area of where Earl Sweatshirt is singing as we
can see from looking at the back ground its
isolated and trashed, so I wanted to conform in my
music video and the way I had done that was buy
doing some location scouting which led me to this
scene, this are looked vandalised but the spray
painting and carnage around that area, therefore I
believed that this would have supported the lyric
to show that he has had a rough up bringing not
only being in his house but nothing looked great
for him even when around his own area. This shot
was taken in de behaviour estate.
Going back to the setting as you can see I am
again going back to the vandalism shown in
the background, Most rap videos are
normally around graffiti's or on streets, we
have conformed that convention and
decided to use that within our music video
as it makes our artists background stand out
as well, it reflect on the behaviour and the
actions he takes when around his area due to
him being a lost undisciplined teenager.
My artist J Stylin is all alone sitting by himself on stairs, I’ve subverted
the one of the key props within my music video, every other hip hop/
rap music video has some number of females, this shows possession
and a sense of being famous and rich, we see this in the image above
in 50 Cents P.I.M.P, he also has a narrative that matches his shots, but
I could have used other gender as well but I choice not too because I
really wanted the audience to really connect with my artist as he’s
alone, as if he’s abandoned because his father left him and he keeps
leaving his mother due to arguments. The fact that I’ve tried to
replicate the same shot in P.I.M.P you can see the possession and the
difference between the 2 actors, My artists is trying to attract his
audience with his words as 50 Cent is using female objects
5. Mise en Scene
In these 2 images I am mostly focusing on the props as you can
see that they both have a hat on, reason why I had made my
artist wear a hat is because I wanted him to be more like Earl
sweatshirt in my music video Chum. The bucket hat and a
snapback is something that marks there identity on how they
look along with how they present their own image, I have also
conformed the fact that they both should wear a jacket with
jeans this is more like a skaters look as we wanted to conform
the look the Earl sweatshirt has within our music video as
well.
The image we tried to create was basic to some extent we
wanted to replicate what Earl sweatshirt has within our music
video how ever there are something that we changed such as
not have shopping trollies on fire which a potential hazard to
local people around us as we didn’t have a area designated to
us specifically
6. Editing
In my music video what I had decided to
conform to was the editing conventions of
the music video Chum by Earl sweatshirt.
What I have conformed is the effect of
black and white being used in my music
video too, this is because I have tried to
replicate the same atmosphere and
emotion with in the music video, how ever
what I have subverted from his music
video is the upside down editing of his
music video, I didn’t find that appealing
even though it went great with the
narrative to explain that he had a upside
down life which is clearly meant to
indicate terrible. To replace that editing
what we had done was used jump shots to
make it feel like his jumping from one part
of the narrative to another.
As I was previously talking about jump cuts I
have conformed that editing technique into
my music video as well, I had thought this
would be a good idea as each jump cut had a
different few sentences which had a different
part of the narrative to so I had made jump
cuts for where it would change the narrative.
I liked this because I could then change the
setting for each of the bits of the narrative.
You can see the jump cuts within the music
video clips, there aren’t any transition to
show that I have used jump cuts
7. Editing
By analysing Earl sweatshirts music video, I haven’t come
across anything that contained slow motion editing, I wanted
to challenge his editing style by having something different
which was slow motion. I added this to show that my artists
daily life feels longer then normal peoples because he
doesn’t have anyone to go through life with, he’s so alone
that he cant really speak to some and he’s of looking for
someone such as his older brother.
To show how I had editing this is that I clicked on the clip
that I want to slow down and then clicked the icon which is
highlighted be and then clicked on slow it would then give ,e
an option on how much I want to slow it down but this will
effect the everything else after as this would increase the
duration of the clip and will put everything out of sync.
The image above shows what I have control
over when I have a clip selected on the
music video. I can control the lighting by
clicking on the black and white effect
which will help me fix the lighting of each
clip as its in black and white and the video
has different clips that were shot at night
and day so I had to level out the lighting.
