What is the genre of your media product?
The Conventions of my music video “Fire” is Pop, we
chose this genre for our music video as we felt Pop
would be the best to shoot as it would allow us more
flexibility due to its conventions and we like the
sound of pop songs compared to the other genres.
Conventions of Pop
CONVETIONS
Artists are clothed in fashionable, stylish and mainstream outfits .
Artist are portrayed as happy, enjoying and content with life.
The lyrics are normally based around love or relationships
Often bands express the unity associated with teens, which is the main target audience for this
genre.
Music genre is normally conveyed through the video dressing and setting. • Pop magazines are
often themed with bright and bold colors which are normally associated with positive vibe .
Pop is that the song usually is between 3-5 minutes long with a set structure and a consistent
beat.
Conventions Of Music Videos
Camera Shots: Music videos tend to include many long shots, close
ups and mid shots. This is to create emphasis on the artist, location
and emotions. Also, close ups are used not only to show emotions but
to reflect the words of the song with the movement of the lips of the
artist.
Other Conventions include, Editing on the beat, Shots of instruments, A
Narrative and Live performances. Our Music video uses more of a
narrative, we don’t use any live performances as I felt if I did that it
would take away from the immersion of the music video as we wanted
our video to be about having a good time, Positivity and felt that a live
performance would not fit into our video.
What Conventions Did we use?
As the editor I wanted to make sure we implemented editing on the beat as it changes the pace of the music
video, looks good on the eye and adds excitement. I used it twice in the video on to of the drumbeats which go
into the chorus, as the verses are slow but the chorus is a faster pace and so editing on the beat allows for a
good transition from a slow verse to a faster paced chorus. The Music video is also about happiness and
positivity so throughout the main singer is looking happy, which is one of the conventions of a pop video. Also it
matches the lyrics of the song and makes it look more appealing to the audience. Using facial expressions on
different close-ups such as the one with the flare grenade helps to show the audience that the artist is happy
and “content with life” which is a main convention of a pop video.
For Pop videos the singer is usually dressed in fashionable, stylish clothes, we made sure the singer was
wearing fashionable clothes to go with the setting and conform to the conventions of a pop music video. Our
Artist has various outfits throughout the music video, one shot she is wearing a jean jacket which is stylish
clothes a lot of celebrities wear. Our Outfits were based on mainstream pop artists such as Taylor Swift and how
she dresses in her music videos helped inspire the costume in our music video. The location of our video was In
a Forest like location, the closest we thought was like a forest was Richmond Park. The Forest came to mind
based on real life mainstream artists such as Coldplay and their Music Video “Midnight” Which show the artist in
a forest, “Content With Life” and Dancing. This video was an inspiration to our music video and shows all the
conventions of a pop video and inspired the location we used.
Did we use Other Conventions?
We Stuck to the conventions of pop strictly, pop conventions were easy to follow and really
we did not need to use any other conventions from other genre of music. Other Genres
conventions which came to mind to follow but we never did were genres such as Hip Hop,
These Genres use conventions such as live performance of the artist rapping, artist wearing
baggy clothes, men are seen as powerful in Hip Hop Surrounded by women dressed in
explicit clothes.
None of these conventions appealed to us and we felt would not fit into our music video so
we stuck strictly to the conventions of pop and did not subvert to any other conventions.
