• I handed out a quantitative questionnaire to a range of people and
received 16 of them completed:

These types of questions are included in
my questionnaire to help identify
characteristics in my audience like
different ages, genders and locations.

The majority of my participants are female - however, only by 2 more. I
tried to keep them as even as possible to prevent gender biased results.
What age category do you fit into?
10-15 years old
16-20 years old
21-30 years old
31-45 years old
46+ years old
The majority of my participants are 16-20 years old. I made sure I
questioned a varied group of ages to see if I could notice any media
related patterns.
What is your main occupation?
Full-time job
Part-time job
Student
Other: Unemployed
The majority of my participants are students, this will allow me to see
the difference in media related knowledge of students and
workers/other.
Where about in the UK are you from?
North
South
East
West
Central
The majority of my participants are from the South of UK, therefore it is
highly possible that results with be biased to this area.
Knowledge of the Genre
These questions are included in order to determine
the media-related knowledge of the participants, so
that I can identify any viewing habits between the
demographical questions. This then allows me to
understand the audiences demographic who will be
interested in my product.

None of the participants favor Short-film over any other media,
therefore showing short-film’s as an unpopular medium and could
potentially be a niche product.

Which of these is true about the ‘short
form’ media?
A film that is longer than
40 minutes.

Although 75% of people have seen a short film and 100% people understand and
identify a key characteristic of the genre, only 7/16 people knew of the short film The
Most Beautiful Man in The World, which has won many awards and is a well-known
short. Therefore this tells me that the quality of distribution and marketing could be
lacking, possibly due to it not being a favored media and therefore not heavily funded.

The results were quite balanced, but the majority of participants said
that they prefer CGI over naturally-shot films.

Quantitative research

  • 2. Direct Reference • I handed out a quantitative questionnaire to a range of people and received 16 of them completed:
  • 3. Demographic These types of questions are included in my questionnaire to help identify characteristics in my audience like different ages, genders and locations.
  • 4. What is your gender? Male Female The majority of my participants are female - however, only by 2 more. I tried to keep them as even as possible to prevent gender biased results.
  • 5. What age category do you fit into? 10-15 years old 16-20 years old 21-30 years old 31-45 years old 46+ years old The majority of my participants are 16-20 years old. I made sure I questioned a varied group of ages to see if I could notice any media related patterns.
  • 6. What is your main occupation? Full-time job Part-time job Student Other: Unemployed The majority of my participants are students, this will allow me to see the difference in media related knowledge of students and workers/other.
  • 7. Where about in the UK are you from? North South East West Central The majority of my participants are from the South of UK, therefore it is highly possible that results with be biased to this area.
  • 8. Knowledge of the Genre These questions are included in order to determine the media-related knowledge of the participants, so that I can identify any viewing habits between the demographical questions. This then allows me to understand the audiences demographic who will be interested in my product.
  • 9. What is your favored media? Music Film Short-Film Photography TV Magazines Other None of the participants favor Short-film over any other media, therefore showing short-film’s as an unpopular medium and could potentially be a niche product.
  • 10. Have you seen a short film? Yes No The majority of my participants have seen a short film.
  • 11. Have you had an education in media? Yes No The majority of my participants are media educated.
  • 12. Which of these is true about the ‘short form’ media? A film that is longer than 40 minutes. A film that has in-depth character stories. A film that is usually 10 minutes. A film that needs a lot of high budget funding. All of the participants understand that a short film is usually 10 minutes long.

Do you know any of these short films? 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Youth About a Girl September The Six Dollar Fifty Man Two Cars, One Night The Most Beautiful Man in The World Stripes Soft Although 75% of people have seen a short film and 100% people understand and identify a key characteristic of the genre, only 7/16 people knew of the short film The Most Beautiful Man in The World, which has won many awards and is a well-known short. Therefore this tells me that the quality of distribution and marketing could be lacking, possibly due to it not being a favored media and therefore not heavily funded.

Have you seen any of these short films? 0 1 2 3 4 5 Youth About a Girl September The Six Dollar Fifty Man Two Cars, One Night The Most Beautiful Man in The World Stripes Soft Although 7/16 participants know of The Most Beautiful Man in The World, only 1/17 have seen the film. This tells me that the demand to see short films is low.
  • 15. Viewing Habits These questions will give me an understanding of the demand for media and specifically short films.
  • 16. How often do you watch a film? One or more a day. Once a week. Once a month. Once a year. The majority of my participants watch a film once a week.
  • 17. What is your favorite genre? Comedy Horror Thriller Social Realism Action Adventure Other: Animation Other: Sci-Fi Comedy, Horror and Animation are the most popular genres throughout the participants. However, the results are quite balanced.
  • 18. How do you consume short films? Online TV Theatres Exhibitions Other The majority of my participants watch short films online.
  • 19. Do you know any of these online places to find short films? 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 Film4.com MUBI NetFlix Vimeo Youtube Shortoftheweek.com Filmshorts.com Only three participants know of websites that are specifically for short films. All sixteen participants know of YouTube.
  • 20. Have you ever been to a theatre/exhibition and seen a short film? Yes No The majority of participants haven't seen a short film at a theatre or exhibition.
  • 21. Content These questions will allow me to understand what participants think about the content in films.
  • 22. Select themes/issues you feel that are under- explored in films from the following: Imprisonment vs. Freedom Stimulation vs. Boredom Substance Abuse Underage Pregnancy Youth and anti-scoial behaviour Mourning Disability vs. Ability 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 75% of participants believe that Stimulation vs. Boredom is a theme/issue that is under-explored.

Select types/groups of people that are under- represented in films from the following: 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 Elderly Youth Asian Ethnic Groups Black Ethnic Groups Mentally Ill Physically Ill High Economic Class Low Economic Class Caucasian Ethnic Groups 75% of participants believe that Asian Ethnic Groups are a type/group that are under-represented.
  • 24. What is most important about films? 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 Sound Cinematography Story Aesthetic Actors Directors The majority of participants believe that the story is the most important factor to the films they watch.
  • 25. Is CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) important for you in a film, or do you prefer naturally-shot films? CGI Naturally-shot The results were quite balanced, but the majority of participants said that they prefer CGI over naturally-shot films.
