3. Sectional Area = Area of rectangular portion + Area of two triangular
portions
A = (B x dm)+ 2(0.5 x S dm x dm) = B x dm+ 2 (0.5xSdm 2)
Quantity = Area*Length
Quantity = B dm+ 2 (0.5xS dm 2)
5. Methods to Calculate The Quantity of
Earthwork
1. Mid – Sectional Area Method:
Sectional Area = Area of rectangular portion + Area of two triangular portions
A = (B x dm)+ 2(0.5 x S dm x dm) = B x dm+ 2 (0.5xSdm 2)
Quantity = Area*Length
Quantity = B dm+ 2 (0.5xS dm2)
7. Area of Side sloping surface:
The Mean Sloping Breadth = √(Sd2+d2)
Area of both side slopes = 2* d√(S+1)
8. 2. Mean Sectional Area Method:
Sectional Area = Area of rectangular portion + Area of two triangular
portions
Sectional area at one end, A1 = B x d1 +S d1
2
Sectional area at other end, A2 = B x d2 +S d2
2
Mean Sectional Area = (A1+A2)/2
Quantity = (A1+A2)/2 * L

10. Calculate the quantity of earthwork for 200mtr length for a portion of
road in an uniform ground the heights of banks at the two ends being
1.00m and 1.60m. The formation width is 10mte and side slopes 2:1
(H:V). Assume that there is no transverse slope.
11. Calculate the area of the side slopes of portion of a bank for a length
of 200mtr and the heights of banks at the two ends being 2.50m and
3.50m and the ratio of the side slopes is 2:1
If the side slopes are to be provided with 15cm thick stone pitching,
calculate the cost of pitching at rate of Rs. 150/m3
12. Reduced Level (RL) of ground along the center line of a proposed road
from chainage 10 to chainage 20 are given below. The formation level
at the 10th chainage is 107 and the road is in downward gradient of 1
in 150 Upto the chainage 14 and then the gradient changes to 1 in 100
downward. Formation width of road is 10mtr and side slopes of
banking are 2:1 (H:V). Length of the chain is 30mtr.
i. Draw the longitudinal section of road and typical C/S and prepare
an estimation of earthwork at the rate of Rs. 275 per cu mtr.
ii. Find also the area of the side slopes and the cost of turfing the
side slopes at the rate of Rs. 60 per sq.mtr
17. Estimate the cost of earthwork for a portion of road for 400mtr length
from the following data:
Formation width of the road is 10meter . Side slopes are 2:1 in banking
1 ½ : 1 in cutting.
