Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies can occur when a person does not consume enough of the right nutrients, even if they eat enough total food. There are two main types of malnutrition: overnutrition, which is consuming more than what the body needs and can lead to obesity, and undernutrition, which is a lack of necessary nutrients and can cause deficiencies. Common micronutrient deficiencies include vitamin A deficiency, which can cause blindness; iron deficiency anemia; and iodine deficiency disorder, which can damage brain development. Consumption of nutrient-rich foods and iodized salt can help prevent deficiencies.
