Question Two
Rhianna Henson-Smith
This is Matthew Foster, a A-Level drama
student who featured in our film Doctor
6:19 as Doctor Joseph Damien.
Joseph is seen as a high society figure,
who saves peoples lives on a daily basis.
Within our film he has schizophrenia, a
mental health condition which allows
him to hear voices inside his head.
Religion is a key theme within our film and is the main reason for Joseph to
commit his murders. He is seen as upper class, being well educated and
intellectual.
Our character is seen mainly in a suit and tie, showing his authority and making
him appear smart.
We show his character through the use of different mise-en-scene. For example,
certain props such as scientific posters and an office setting.
Doctor Joseph Damien:
Our main character is a Doctor at the Royal surrey hospital. He is upper
class and is well educated to get into the job he has, however has a very
different social life which nobody would imagine him to have.
A film with a similar character within is ‘Mr Brooks a psychological thriller
about a man who is sometimes controlled by his murder-and-mayhem-
loving alter ego. Mr Brooks is a smart business man, who like Joseph wears
a suit and tie and is in the upper class of society. People both believe in the
characters and trust them with things. He also commits a series of murders
like Joseph and regrets them afterwards. However he murders his victims
with a partner whereas our doctor is alone.
Key Similarities and DifferencesSimilarities Differences
Both are wealthy and high in society and come from
upper/middle class. Additionally they both have authority
from their title ‘Mr and Dr’.
Both characters are different ages, Brooks has a wife and
family, in which his daughter becomes pregnant, altering his
killing habits.
They both hide their murderous side from the outside world
and have a dark mysterious side which nobody is aware
about.
Mr brooks is well-known for being a serial murderer, called
the ‘Thumbprint Killer’. Whereas joseph is a secret and only
known to the police.
They are both seen to be wearing similar costumes, for
example a suit and tie, making them appear smart and
important in society.
Mr Brooks is not religious like our character Joseph,
therefore means they have different reasons for committing
the murderous acts they do. Both additionally are going to
commit suicide, however Brooks doesn’t in order to see his
grand-child, whereas Joseph does not have a reason to live
for.
After they have committed a murder, both are aware of what
they have done a deeply regret it.
Mr Brooks is blackmailed, whereas Joseph isn’t, as he is not
well-known and had a secret dark side.
Both try to prevent more murders happening. Joseph s eventually discovered by the police, whereas
Brooks gets away with it, as Mr Smith a assistant in the
murders later on in the film, covers the evidence in his
DNA.
Both characters have the mental condition schizophrenia,
turning to their alter-ego.
Mr Brooks kills different people, whereas Damien targets
teenage girls who are abusing their body through the means
of alcohol and other factors.
Both murder victims of a younger age e.g teens/early 20’s.
Additionally both are caught in a police investigation.
They both use different methods of helping them to not
commit more murders, for example Joseph takes pills and
Brooks attends counselling.
Another character who has links to Joseph is the main character from Bret Easton Ellis'
American Psycho. Audiences find him extremely scary, because he seemed 'normal' to
everyone around him, but his deeds were so extremely brutal and coldblooded, that it is
shocking. The film is based on a wealthy New York investment banking executive who
hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates
deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies. This is similar to Joseph when we see him
scribbling on the bible showing that his alter ego is too strong, that he cannot act
‘normal’ all the time at work. They are both in high society jobs and do their best to
appear fine to others around them. They both also wear similar costumes e.g suit,
however Joseph does not commit his murders in this, but in a dark hoodie. Another
similarity is the weapon used to commit their murders, both use a knife which is shown
to be more of a physical act than a gun. This shows the characters brutality within the
film and how mentally unstable they both are.
Similarities Differences
Both use the same weapon e.g knife to kill
their victims.
However Bateman varies his choice of weapon,
ranging from a knife to an axe, whereas Joseph
only uses a knife.
Both wear the same similar costumes, for
example a suit and tie, making them appear
smart and charming to others.
Joseph has a particular theme to his murders,
killing those who are teenage girls who abuse
their bodies, whereas Bateman kills various
people.
They are both upper class, as they are seen to
have high authority. For example a investment
banker and a doctor.
Joseph always goes to a nightclub of some sort,
whereas Bateman kills in different places, for
example a homeless man and his dog in an
alley.
They have a job to help others, however keep
their dark side a secret to others.
Bateman does not care about what he wears
while committing murderers, whereas Joseph
dresses differently, putting on a dark hoodie.
Both escalate deeper into their illogical,
gratuitous fantasies
Joseph regrets his killings whereas Bateman
carries on and regrets nothing.
They are both represented as high class
through their posh, big cars and designer
clothes.
Joseph has a big theme of religion, which he is deeply
in to, reading the bible and basing his murders on a
religious teaching.
Similar looking features e.g dark hair and
brown eyes.
There are not many religious symbols in American-
Psycho.
Doctor Joseph Damien also is similar to the main killer in the famous film Se7en by
David Fincher. This is because both of the killers have a religious theme as to why
they commit murders. In se7en the killer commits the seven deadly sins in a brutal
way. Whereas ours commits murders to raise attention to those who do not use their
body as a temple of God. Both link with the constant reference to God and religious
symbols.
Similarities Differences
Both have a massive religious theme
within the films, both basing their
murders on them.
Various use of weapons in Se7en,
whereas Joseph only uses a Knife.
Religious symbols are used
throughout and references to God are
constant.
Murders take place in different places
in Se7en, whereas in Doctor 6:16
they are outside a nightclub.
Both characters are mentally unstable
and believe God is telling them to
commit the murders.
The victims are different whereas
Joseph only kills teenage girls.
Both have police and investigators on
their case and following their every
move.
Joseph is in the upper class of society
whereas in Se7en the main character
appears as a middle class ‘normal’
person.
Both are very determined in what
they believe in.
Joseph has a highly appreciated job in
society and helps people on a regular
basis, where as in Se7en he does no
good and regrets nothing he has done.
Sara - Victim
Our victim within our film is a teenage girl who is seen smoking next to a brick wall. She has
appeared to do nothing wrong in the opening, yet suggests she is going to be joseph Damien’s first
victim in Doctor 6:19. The social group she represents is young girls, at high school age. We
showed this through the use of her costume, for example wearing jeans, coat, trainers and a bag. A
victim in a film that links to this a character from the horror film Scream. This is because firstly
and most obvious, they both are victims of a murder, but they are similar in character as they do
not know the murderer and are seen as innocent, without a clue as to what is really happening.
Both are of the same age and are shown to be typical teenagers by the use of props, for example
Sara smoking and in scream the use of a mobile phone, showing how social teenagers are.
For example in psycho the woman is having a shower in a hotel room, when a figure
appears behind her and brutally murders her. Whereas Sara is shown running away
from Joseph. Sara has been murdered for a reason, linking to religious teachings of
abusing her body, however in scream there appeared to be no reason to before hand. A
difference In characters is that Sara is a teenager whereas in scream the victim is a
middle aged woman, which overall shows how venerable females are to males like our
character Joseph.
Another character in a film that links to Sara
is the main character from the popular film
‘Psycho’. This is because both are killed by a
knife in a horrific way and both do not have a
clue what is going to happen.

Mr Brooks kills different people, whereas Damien targets teenage girls who are abusing their body through the means of alcohol and other factors. Both murder victims of a younger age e.g teens/early 20’s. Additionally both are caught in a police investigation. They both use different methods of helping them to not commit more murders, for example Joseph takes pills and Brooks attends counselling.
  • 5. Another character who has links to Joseph is the main character from Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. Audiences find him extremely scary, because he seemed 'normal' to everyone around him, but his deeds were so extremely brutal and coldblooded, that it is shocking. The film is based on a wealthy New York investment banking executive who hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies. This is similar to Joseph when we see him scribbling on the bible showing that his alter ego is too strong, that he cannot act ‘normal’ all the time at work. They are both in high society jobs and do their best to appear fine to others around them. They both also wear similar costumes e.g suit, however Joseph does not commit his murders in this, but in a dark hoodie. Another similarity is the weapon used to commit their murders, both use a knife which is shown to be more of a physical act than a gun. This shows the characters brutality within the film and how mentally unstable they both are.
  • 6. Similarities Differences Both use the same weapon e.g knife to kill their victims. However Bateman varies his choice of weapon, ranging from a knife to an axe, whereas Joseph only uses a knife. Both wear the same similar costumes, for example a suit and tie, making them appear smart and charming to others. Joseph has a particular theme to his murders, killing those who are teenage girls who abuse their bodies, whereas Bateman kills various people. They are both upper class, as they are seen to have high authority. For example a investment banker and a doctor. Joseph always goes to a nightclub of some sort, whereas Bateman kills in different places, for example a homeless man and his dog in an alley. They have a job to help others, however keep their dark side a secret to others. Bateman does not care about what he wears while committing murderers, whereas Joseph dresses differently, putting on a dark hoodie. Both escalate deeper into their illogical, gratuitous fantasies Joseph regrets his killings whereas Bateman carries on and regrets nothing. They are both represented as high class through their posh, big cars and designer clothes. Joseph has a big theme of religion, which he is deeply in to, reading the bible and basing his murders on a religious teaching. Similar looking features e.g dark hair and brown eyes. There are not many religious symbols in American- Psycho.
  • 7. Doctor Joseph Damien also is similar to the main killer in the famous film Se7en by David Fincher. This is because both of the killers have a religious theme as to why they commit murders. In se7en the killer commits the seven deadly sins in a brutal way. Whereas ours commits murders to raise attention to those who do not use their body as a temple of God. Both link with the constant reference to God and religious symbols.
  • 8. Similarities Differences Both have a massive religious theme within the films, both basing their murders on them. Various use of weapons in Se7en, whereas Joseph only uses a Knife. Religious symbols are used throughout and references to God are constant. Murders take place in different places in Se7en, whereas in Doctor 6:16 they are outside a nightclub. Both characters are mentally unstable and believe God is telling them to commit the murders. The victims are different whereas Joseph only kills teenage girls. Both have police and investigators on their case and following their every move. Joseph is in the upper class of society whereas in Se7en the main character appears as a middle class ‘normal’ person. Both are very determined in what they believe in. Joseph has a highly appreciated job in society and helps people on a regular basis, where as in Se7en he does no good and regrets nothing he has done.
  • 9. Sara - Victim Our victim within our film is a teenage girl who is seen smoking next to a brick wall. She has appeared to do nothing wrong in the opening, yet suggests she is going to be joseph Damien’s first victim in Doctor 6:19. The social group she represents is young girls, at high school age. We showed this through the use of her costume, for example wearing jeans, coat, trainers and a bag. A victim in a film that links to this a character from the horror film Scream. This is because firstly and most obvious, they both are victims of a murder, but they are similar in character as they do not know the murderer and are seen as innocent, without a clue as to what is really happening. Both are of the same age and are shown to be typical teenagers by the use of props, for example Sara smoking and in scream the use of a mobile phone, showing how social teenagers are.
  • 10. For example in psycho the woman is having a shower in a hotel room, when a figure appears behind her and brutally murders her. Whereas Sara is shown running away from Joseph. Sara has been murdered for a reason, linking to religious teachings of abusing her body, however in scream there appeared to be no reason to before hand. A difference In characters is that Sara is a teenager whereas in scream the victim is a middle aged woman, which overall shows how venerable females are to males like our character Joseph. Another character in a film that links to Sara is the main character from the popular film ‘Psycho’. This is because both are killed by a knife in a horrific way and both do not have a clue what is going to happen.
