CREATIVE WRITING | 2
COURSE ORIENTATION
Draw the image that you imagine while
listening to and reading the poem.
Pre-Activity
I WANDERED LONELY AS A CLOUD
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
What do we call a writer’s way to appeal to
the senses of the reader?
Pre-Activity
IMAGERY
Imagery is a literary device that refers to
the use of figurative language to evoke a
sensory experience or create a picture with
words for a reader

IMAGERY
By utilizing effective descriptive language
and figures of speech, writers appeal to a
reader’s senses of sight, taste, smell, touch,
and sound, as well as internal emotion and
feelings.

IMAGERY
Imagery is a literary device used in poetry,
novels, and other writing that uses vivid
description that appeals to a readers’
senses to create an image or idea in their
head. Through language, imagery does
not only paint a picture, but aims to
portray the sensational and emotional
experience within text.

“The baby is
cute.”
Can you imagine what the baby
looks like?
“The baby was as
pudgy as a
marshmallow and
had giant blue
eyes.”
This is what you can see, and
includes visual descriptions.
Physical attributes including
color, size, shape, lightness
and darkness, shadows, and
shade are all part of visual
imagery.
The moonlight shone over
the lake and reflected in
her big, dark eyes.
Appeals to the sense of smell
by describing something’s
fragrance or odor.
The sweet aroma of the freshly
baked chocolate chip cookies
wafted from the kitchen to the
living room, causing Greg’s
stomach to rumble.
Gustatory imagery
describes taste. It
often works hand in
hand with olfactory
imagery (what’s taste
without smell after
all?) and should appeal
to reader’s tastebuds.
As he bit into the
juicy burger, a
variety of spices
danced upon his
tongue
appeals to the sense
of touch by
describing how
something physically
feels, such as its
temperature, texture,
or other sensation.
A gust of cold
wind pierced her
body.
Appeals to the sense
of hearing or sound
by including melodic
sounds, silence, and
harsh noises.
She awoke to the
chirping of birds and
the soft whisper of a
breeze as it passed
through the tree
outside her window.
appeals to a
reader’s sense of
motion or movement by
describing the
sensations of moving
or the movements of
an object.
The trees dance
as the wind
blows.
Her phone signaled,
immediately setting her teeth
on edge. She looked at the
broken screen, saw his name,
and slapped the phone back
down on her desk.
The sweet pondant icing
melted on my tongue. The
word delightful came to mind.
When we quickly plunge into the cool
water, it took our breath away and raised
goose bumps to our arms. We had had
been swimming in this pond since we
were kids.
Erick sat alone at the bench nearest the
main door so he wouldn't miss Via. The
room was noisy. The clang of heavy
dishes glided from the kitchen. Ice tinkled
as it settled in his water glass. His watch
read 9:30. She wasn't coming.
When we quickly plunge into the cool
water, it took our breath away and raised
goose bumps to our arms. We had had
been swimming in this pond since we
were kids.
Use imagery to make the
following sentences more
creative.
a) The apple is on the
table.
b) Kevin cooked
