So, where a usability-centered interface allow users to perform activities and tasks in the most efficient way, a user-centered interface is designed around the user. This includes user experience and visual design that is specific to the target demographic and the behaviors and desires of the user. - #15 This is a heatmap. It shows how long the user gazes at a certain area. Red shows a longer gaze.We see here a strong gaze focus on the Sign in area and the Search box and a little where users were browsing topics.Heat maps are great but they’re slightly limited compared to what you can see with eye-tracking.
- #16 With eye-tracking you see the gaze, which is represented by the red circle… this gets larger the longer the user gazes at the spot. The red lines indicate the direction of the gaze. Since this is captured over time while users are performing actions this is information that shows the context in which it happened. So, while a task is being performed, you can see exactly where they looked.User-centered design means working with your users throughout the project.
- #17 Remote – testers use their webcamThere are remote eye-tracking tools out there that offer a very low cost test, typically based per user. Here they use people from all over the country to perform user testing through their webcam.
- #18 In-person at a research labHere the user is tested in-person in a lab or other setting, one-on-one with a proctor. Cost is higher than remote testing but you have more flexibility in the tasks you ask them to perform. The proctor has the ability to get more information if there are areas in the test that need reinforcement. Or if they want to get more insight into why a certain action was made.
