20th Century
50s

During this decade, casual sportswear was an
increasingly large component of women's wardrobes.
Casual skirts were narrow or very full; pants became
very narrow, and were worn ankle-length. Pants cropped
to mid-calf called houseboy pants, while shorter pants,
below the knee, were called pedal pushers.
Suits consisted of dark blue, dark brown, and charcoal;
the ties were also uniform and dark. The Ivy League style
consisted of cardigan sweaters, which was used for the
letter sweater and cherished among athletes.

It was around the later 50’s that Rock & Roll became popular, thanks to
the mass production of the electric guitar, with leading artists like Elvis

Cash and Elvis.

20th Century
70s
Hot pants, platform shoes, and wide leg pants and jeans
known as bell-bottoms are a few of the fashions to come out
of the 1970s. One of the main influences on the fashion of this
decade is from the movie Saturday Night Fever. This was
because the 70’s were the time of Disco with bands like the
Bee Gee’s leading the way. It was also during this decade the
hit movie Grease was released.
Disco’s ultimate replacement was punk fashion. Vivenne Westwood
was one of the original designers who began the punk fashion
movement. It began in the United Kingdom and quickly spread to
Europe. This was because new kinds of rock became large with heavy
metal, progressive and punk as some of the new sub genres with the
likes of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Black Sabbath.

20th Century
90s
At the same time mainstream fashion looked back to
previous decades for inspiration, another alternative trend
developed. In the middle of the decade, with the influence
of rock band Nirvana and their lead singer, the iconic Kurt
Cobain and his wife Courtney Love, the new grunge era
began. Cobain and Love were the antithesis of
conservative and inspired fashion trends to adopt what is
known as the 90’s grunge. The Grunge genre had many
groups but one you may have heard of is The Foo
Fighters
The new grunge was an amalgamation of punk, which began in the 1970s, and gothic.
Some of the key elements of the 90s grunge are jeans that are ripped, patched with fabric,
and/or drawn on with a permanent marker, long sleeved flannels, long sleeved cotton
shirts with a rock band t-shirt over it, doc martens, skate shoes, Chuck Taylors, or any
other type of boot. The main influences driving grunge fashion are comfort and creativity.
However as time went on Pop became big with new kinds of music and groups
ranging from famous groups like The Spice Girls, The Backstreet Boys and
Nsync to Michael Jackson, Britney Spears.

From 2010 onwards, colours such as teal,
cobalt blue, pink and neon yellow have been
popular for t-shirts and jackets, along with
skinny jeans. Madras shirts with tartan prints
and bright coloured casual clothing are popular
for both men and women in the West.

During the years between the 90’s rock was
on the decline whilst pop stayed strong with
people like Justin Beaver and One Direction.
The electronic sub genre was on the rise since
the creation of auto-tune.
Hip-hop was also on the rise in the 20 years
with artists such as Kanye West. Finally during
this time techno music was on rise with one
famous sub-genre at the lead Dub-step
created by Skrillex.

Vintage clothing remained popular, although it
was becoming increasingly common to cut
unused stock of older fabric to modern patterns
or remake older garments into reconstructed
clothing.
Throughout the decade, both men and women
from wealthy backgrounds continue wearing
