2. College of Natural and Applied Sciences Mission Statement Our Mission:The primary mission of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences is to provide our majors with excellent discipline-based educational experiences in the classroom, and with research, internship, field experience, mentoring, and service learning opportunities. Further, the College is committed to preparing our majors to excel in graduate and professional programs and to be competitive in the job market. In recognition of science as a foundation of modern society and of a comprehensive liberal arts education, the mission includes extending the opportunity for quality science education to all students so that they become scientifically literate and productive citizens. Finally, the College recognizes its important role as the University's focal point for scientific scholarship and expertise, and as an active contributor to the advancement of science. Centers and Initiatives serve to facilitate basic and applied research in areas where college research directions and regional needs are well matched.
3. Psychology at Coastal Carolina University The psychology program at Coastal Carolina University enrolls approximately 300 majors. Classes are usually of moderate size ranging from 20 to 50 students. Individual attention is available to all students, and faculty advisers work closely with students concerning academic advisement and career choices. Students can choose either a bachelor of arts degree program or a bachelor of science degree program. Both undergraduate degree programs provide students with a solid background in the traditional areas of psychology. In addition to approximately 40 hours of core curriculum courses, psychology majors complete at least 34 hours of specialized courses.
4. Psychology Major A major in psychology offers students a thorough foundation in research design/ methodology and statistics. In addition, psychology majors will be exposed to the major content areas in psychology, specifically basic principles of learning and experimental psychology, developmental and social psychology, and areas in clinical assessment. Psychology majors often seek employment with mental health and social service agencies. In addition, many psychology majors pursue graduate degrees to prepare for careers in teaching, research, counseling, and consulting. The psychology department offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees. A total of 36 credit hours in approved course work is required to complete the major.
5. Psychology Minor A minor in psychology offers students majoring in other fields a foundation in core areas of psychology through course work in psychological statistics, experimental psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology. A total of 22 credit hours in approved course work is required to complete the minor.
6. PSI CHI PSI CHI is the National Honor Society in Psychology. The Coastal Carolina University Chapter of Psi Chi has been active since 1990. Membership in Psi Chi is open to students who are Psychology Majors or Minors and who have maintained a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
7. The Psychology Club The PSYCHOLOGY CLUB is a student-run social organization open to all students with an interest in Psychology. The club sponsors fund raisers for local organizations, invites speakers to campus, and arranges trips to local and regional psychology conferences. The Psychology Club has been active since 1993.
