The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Assignment 1: Individual Journal

2. Entry 1: Motivation 22 April 2015
Well today I’m going to write a journal which is about motivation. Which
I learn from social psychology class that is in chapter 2. First there are 2 type
of motivation which are intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. So in this
journal, I’m going to talk about how I change my extrinsic motivation into
intrinsic motivation.
When I was in high school which is from form 1 to form 3, my math is
horrible if I’m not wrong the highest marks for my math in form 1 which is only
about 54 marks and the rest of it Is like 30 marks or 20 marks. When I told my
mom what I get for my math result in the final exam, my mom was like “Oh My
god your marks is like……. ” then she said “No way, i should find you a
personal teacher to teach you math”. Yeah my mom did find me a personal
math teacher to teach me math in the end of the year of 2008 but the thing is
I’m not the hardworking student and the other thing is I don’t like tuition but I
got no choice but to learn math. I call my tuition teacher Miss Ooi every time
when I was in her tuition class, I always wait the time pass and hope she be
gone in my eye. I feel so abuse when she explain all the math theory and stuff
because it just too damn boring. Yes the result for my math did improve a lot
when I was in form 2. Well the highest mark in form 2 is 60 something and the
rest are between 50 to 59 which is good for me already. When I was form 3,
one of my best friend come and tell me join their tuition class which is not
personal tuition and he told me that he can promise the tuition is whole lot fun
with them. So I give it a try, so means that currently I have two math tuition.
The new math teacher call Irina and the way she teach is more interesting
than the old one but the result are are just remain at the same point which is
3. 50 to 60 but I don’t know why my PMR get an A for it I was like so happy.
After finishing my form 3, I decide to take additional math. My old math tuition
teacher look down at me and I still remember what she told me. She told me
“my students who always get A in math say that additional math is so damn
hard”. In that time i was like so damn mad and my mind say “Go F***
yourself”. When I get my first result for my add math, im so disappointed
because I just get around 40 marks and my old math tuition teacher keep
laughing at me while she is teaching me. No longer then, I quite her tuition
class so now I just got one math tuition class. After what she teach me, I did
learn a lot and in that moment I start to realize that math and add math is
quite easy. Yeah, and it also the time which I start to feel that math is fun. So
the next exam I get 80 plus for my add math and math. I was so happy and I
start to feel addicted into math subject. So I keep maintain my add math result
and math result at the point of 90 and above. Some of my friends call me as
math god and this make me more motivated for studying math. After I get my
SPM result I get an A+ for math and add math but I don’t feel any happy at all.
I think this is because that I keep getting A for my math but until one day, the
old math tuition teacher come to my house and ask my mom what I get for my
both math. Yeah in that time, my mom told her that I get both A+ and I saw
her reaction she was like so damn shock when she heard what my mom said.
Damn, the feels I was like so damn proud of myself.
4. Entry 2: Racism 22 April 2015
In chapter 7 of Think Social Psychology, I learnt about what is Racism.
Racism who believes that a particular race is superior to another.
In this world there a lot of people living with different kind of races. Well
in America, there are “white people” and “black people” living together which I
thought that they the “white people” will have the fair perception toward the
“black people” but I was wrong until I meet my sister which study in Nebraska.
What she told me is that the police in United States they often patrol around
the “black people” area only and for the “white people” area they just rarely
patrol. Well in Malaysia, I believe that there a lot racist people especially we
are in a multicultural country. Well for me I can say that I’m really racist when I
was around high school. I believe the reason behind why I am racist is
because of Malaysia Politics. Every time when I saw a Malay the first
impression is they are lazy when I say lazy, it’s really lazy like I also don’t
know how to describe in words and they are like quite stupid no matter in
what. I see them in this way is because of no matter how we many A+ we get,
the Chinese students and the Indian Students will hardly or never get to study
in Local University of Malaysia but the Malays they only get like 2 A’s and they
get to study why is this so? So when I saw Chinese people who study in Local
University, I will think that they are really smart but when a Malay told me that
he study in Local University I still think that his dumb. Until one night before I
sleep, I did think about why I’m racist and what the reason are. I realize that
the main reason why Malay is so lazy and stupid is because of our “smart”
government which they think they are smart but all they do are actually ruin
our reputation. They only care about their own race which is very stupid idea.
5. For other example is whenever I saw a Malay driving a luxurious car, my mind
will automatically think that he or she did not own that car is because of their
laziness. But when I saw Chinese or Indian people who driving a luxurious
car, my mind will say that “wow he or she are truly rich” yes, I know that not
every Malay are lazy and stupid but the thing is so far I dint see any of them
who is smart and hardworking. Usually when I order food from a waiter which
is Malay, I will use English language to order food although I’m bad in English
but I just don’t want to use their language because I think that English is more
important than Malay language. When I come to Taylor study, I try to order
food by using Malay language I realize that the waiter is much more willing to
serve me and I saw the face expression of the waiter is not like last time
(bitter face). At that moment, I realize that Malays are just same like us
friendly and I rethink again and I think that the reason they lazy is because our
government “manage” strategy. Until now I still try to use Malay language
when I communicate with Malays. I really can feel that they are not really as
what I think. I’m trying to erase or get rid of this kind of racist mindset but it’s
not that easy to say get rid and really get rid of it.
6. Entry 3: Persuasion 22 April 2015
In chapter 6 of Think Social Psychology, I have learn about The Power
of Persuasion. The Power of Persuasion simply mean that it is attempts to
influence others’ attitudes or behaviors.
There are various kind of messages to persuade a person or a group of
people no matter in making decision, or buying product. Based on this
concept, I can relate my personal experience on it. For example, the
advertisement of MacDonald. We all know that MacDonald is a well-known
franchise company in the whole wide world and it have various kind of burger
to choose from. If I’m not mistaken the date, this happen event happen to me
around last year January when MacDonald first introduce their new breakfast
set. They name that as “Brekkie wrap”. It have two different kind of wrap and
that is “Brekkie wrap with chicken roll” and “Brekkie wrap with sausage”. I
know it advertise their brekkie wrap in YouTube advertisement but I dint even
care for it. Because firstly, the starting of the advertisement is just so normal
and no attractive at all to me so every time I just wait the 5 second and skip
the rest of the advertisement and watch the video I want to watch. Until one
day, I just don’t know why, perhaps I lazy to skip the advertisement or just
curious what is all about of the rest of the advertisement is? So I just watch
the entire advertisement. At that time, It is already in the late night and I was
so hungry at that time. The way that MacDonald advertise their brand new
wrap, it just mention the ingredient of the wrap like “grilled chicken sausage”,
“smoky chicken roll” and so on. It do get my attention because that time I was
hungry. So I decide to go in the next morning. Until the next morning, when I
order the Brekkie wrap, I tough I have to choose either one of the wrap
7. because it have two different kind of flavor, so I say: “ ermmm, I want the
brekkie wrap breakfast”. Then the cashier say: “okay, that all?” In that
moment, I also don’t know what to reply and just say: “yea, that all” after what
I say, I just tell myself okay I sure can’t finish this two wrap because each of
the wrap look so big for me but I was wrong when they serve up the food.
When I look at it, my first mind is OH MY GOD the wrap is so damn small and
now how can I get full for this two “Mini” wrap? I have no choice to take my
food and bring it to the nearest table and eat. While I’m eating I look at the
menu and told myself: “MacDonald you really got me this time” and the food it
just taste so normal not like what I expected because the way how the
advertisement present to me is like so damn delicious. In that time, I was a
little bit of disappointed. But in that time I was laughing to myself and say
MacDonald you really got me this time.
8. Entry 4: Fear Based Appeals 22 April 2015
According to chapter 6 of Think Social Psychology, I learn about what
is fear based appeals. It’s a persuasive message that attempts to arouse fear
in order to divert behavior through the threat of impending danger or harm.
Well if you have look through my “social influence” journal, you know
that I’m already have my motorbike licenses. So as a beginner, I’m so obeying
the rule that whenever I ride my bike to a far destination or like a 100 meters
destination, I always wear helmet but several month later, I start to feel that
wearing helmet is wasting my time although it just took me for 5 second and I
start to feel uncomfortable because that the helmet is so tight and plus I’m
wearing glasses. So one day, I decide not to wear helmet. Oh wait, I won’t
wear my helmet when the destination is around my housing area. Okay back
to story, when the first time I did not wear my helmet and ride my bike out, my
mom saw it and shout at me “wear your helmet” but I still refuses to wear
because I’m just going to my friend’s house and the distance between my
house and my friend’s house is around 600 meter? I’m not sure but it took me
around 2 minute to reach his house by riding motorbike. Well from that day
onward, I won’t wear my helmet when I traveling around my housing area I
know that the police is rarely patrol around my housing area because I don’t
remember seeing any police patrol around my housing area too. Well there a
“7-11 shop” just right behind my friend’s house on that day I was hungry and I
was lazy to walk to so I ride my bike down to the 7-11 shop. After buying
some snacks, when I walk out from the shop, I straight say “Dammit” and I got
no choice to wait those police go away. I but after 5 minute, I got no patient to
wait anymore so I walk back to my friend’s house. After few hour later, I walk
9. back down and get my bike and straight ride back to my home. While riding
back to home, I notice that there a car driving behind me at first I don’t care,
but when I reach in front of my house gate, the car also stop too. In that
moment, I realize that I have “F***** up” because it was my dad. When we get
into the house, “several hour of lecture” to me and keep saying “do you want
to be like your uncle who died in an accident just because he did not wear
helmet just like you? Or you want to be a gangster?” after for few days, my
mom keep sending me those disgusting picture like head explode due to no
wearing helmet and something similar like that through Facebook. I straight
reply to my mom and I say “Stop sending me those picture it’s really annoying
and I get it WEAR HELMET”. After few month later, there’s an accident near
to my housing area in that time, I pass through the accident area and I saw
there’s a lot of blood on the road and I saw that it was a young man without
his head. After that incidence, I swear to myself that I will wear my helmet
whenever I “touch” my bike.
10. Entry 5: Social Influence 22 April 2015
Social influence is what I want to write for this journal. The meaning of
social influence is simply mean by when one's emotions, opinions, or
behaviors are affected by others.
I still remember when I was form 4 which I’m 17 years old and we know
that 17 years old can get a motorbike licenses. Well, most of my friends which
their birthday are between January to May and my birthday is held on Jun.
When all of my friends get their motorbike licenses, all of them keep hang out
together and of Couse they invite me to join too so I was like keep hang out
with them too but the only different is they ride their own bike and my mom
fetch me go to the destination. At first, all of my friend are okay with this
because that I dint pass my birthday yet and I can’t even get my licenses too
but one thing is that all of my friends did not know that I don’t like riding
motorbike. After passing my birthday, all of my friends ask me when I want to
get my licenses. I told them that I don’t really like to ride motorbikes after that
all of them was like “yea sure”. Soon I realize that after school, all of my
friends hang out without me for several times I was very angry and I go and
ask one of my friends “why these day all of you hang out without me?” and my
friends told me that I’m a baby boy or something like that. I was so angry in
that moment but then I still feel that its okay since I don’t like to ride motorbike
too. After school, all of my friends drag me to the motor park and force me to
ride on it. I still remember what my friend told me. He said: “you say you don’t
like bike right? But did you try it before?” So I give it a try and I ride on it. After
riding one of my friends bike, I went back home and did not think about riding
bike or changing my mind. Next day and onward, my friend keep calling me
11. “baby boy” I was like so angry and angry. So I decide to take my motorbike
licenses. So it took me around 1 month to get my licenses.
After getting my licenses, all of my friends come around me and said
“welcome back fool” and in that time I was a little bit of mad and I said “F***
you all” then all of my friends say “chill out man, this is actually a part of our
plan we want you to get your own licenses and ride your own motorbike so
that we can keep hang out together” after I listen what my friends said, I still
told them “F*** yourself” in a relief way. Soon, I start to love riding motorbike
with my friends hanging around without my mom fetching. I’m glad that there
a concept that call “social influence” because of this, I ride motorbike and I
love it. Every time when I going back to Penang, I surely call all my friends
and we ride our bikes and travel around Penang Island and this is one of the
reason that our friendship bond is that strong.
