Introduction
Protozoa are one-celled animals found
worldwide in most habitats. Most species
are free living, but all higher animals are
infected with one or more species
of protozoa. Infections range
fromasymptomatic to life threatening,
depending on the species and strain of the
parasite and the resistance of the host.
Definition
a phylum or grouping
of phyla which comprises the single-
celled microscopic animals, which
include amoebas, flagellates, ciliates
, sporozoans, and many other
forms. They are now usually treated
as a number of phyla belonging to
the kingdom Protista.organisms of
the Protozoa group.plural
noun: protozoa
Types of
protozoa
• Protozoa are unicellular, heterotrophic,
eukaryotic organisms comprising four
organization
types: amoeba, flagellates, ciliates,
and parasitic sporozoans.
Motility
Organisms traditionally classified
as protozoa are abundant in
aqueous environments and soil,
occupying a range of trophic
levels. The group includes
flagellates (which move with the
help of undulating and beating
flagella). Ciliates (which move by
using hair-like structures called
cilia) and amoebae (which move
by the use of temporary
extensions of cytoplasm called
pseudopodia).
Protozoan
infections
Disease
A number of protozoan pathogens are human
parasites, causing diseases such as malaria (by
Plasmodium), amoebiasis, Protozoa include the agents
of the most significant entrenched infectious diseases,
particularly malaria, and, historically, sleeping
sickness.
Symptoms
Laboratory diagnosis
Examination of blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF),
through direct observation, culture, serology, and
molecular diagnosis (including the use of the
polymerase chain reaction (PCR)), is extremely
important, but tissue samples provide morphological
evidence of infection
Treatment
Antimalarial drugs include mefloquine, chloroquine, proguanil with atovaquone and
doxycycline. They kill or inhibit the growth of protozoa by affecting different stage of the
parasitic life cycle. They are used both to treat and prevent malaria
Prevention
Many protozoan infections can be prevented. Modern sanitary methods can limit the contamination of food
and water with the single-celled parasites, called protozoa, which cause the condition. If you are visiting
an area known to have contaminated water, boil it before use to destroy any parasites
