Value types are at the core of Swift (seriously, mostly everything in the Swift standard library is a value type). But how do you avoid subclassing? That’s where the power of Protocol-Oriented programming comes in. Learn how to structure your code to never subclass (almost) again! Practical everyday examples and ideas for your own code base will be included.
Web and mobile development have always been separate worlds. Sure there have been tools like PhoneGap but it never matched the performance of native apps. React Native is here to change all that by using React to render native components for both iOS and Android. This talk will give an introduction to React Native through the eyes of a web developer.
Compose is stable, it's time to integrate it into our apps! But it can be harder than expected and there are some questions to answer. Can the same architecture of a View-based app be reused or should we change it? Should the Compose code be aware of the architecture at all? And should the non UI code be changed to start using Compose? What can be replaced with a Composable, only the layouts or also something else?
Probably the best answer to all these questions is “it depends”, in this talk we’ll see some reasons and how to leverage Compose and the other tools to create a good architecture. Compose is more than just a UI framework and it can seem appealing to use it in a big portion of an app, a good architecture can be useful to limit this portion and use it only when necessary.
Auto-GWT : Better GWT Programming with XtendSven Efftinge
Presentation from GWT.create 2015 EU
Auto-GWT (auto-gwt.org) is a library for the Google Web Toolkit, that frees your code from unneccessary and complicated boilerplate and at the same time pushes the IDE capabilities to a new level. Auto-GWT is based on Xtend (xtendlang.org).
Xtend is a modern programming language that is 100% compatibly with existing Java libraries and even translates to readable Java source code. With it's slick syntax and powerful features such as lambdas, operator overloading and compile-time macros you can turn any verbose piece of Java code into a small and elegant piece of expressive Xtend code.
In this session we will show how Xtend can be used to program GWT applications and how well the typical GWT idioms are supported by the language.

Most iPhone users don’t bother installing any apps per months. And worse, ~80% never use an app they’ve installed again. The future of mobile is clearly not app, but features. Features that make the iPhone ecosystem still a native experience, but as open and flexible as the web. Learn how you could prepare for that future.
Last October, I gave up my expensive San Francisco apartment, gave away the few big things I did own, and flew to Amsterdam (through Iceland ☃️) with all my worldly possessions in two suitcases and a backpack. Since then, I’ve been to 12 countries and many more cities working from my 13” MacBook Pro.
Being a digital nomad has always been my dream, but I was not nearly prepared for the reality of it. Learn what travel bloggers will not tell you about what it’s really like to be a digital nomad.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere, promising self-driving cars, medical breakthroughs, and new ways of working. But how do you separate hype from reality? How can your company apply AI to solve real business problems?
Here’s what AI learnings your business should keep in mind for 2017.
The technologies and people we are designing experiences for are constantly changing, in most cases they are changing at a rate that is difficult keep up with. When we think about how our teams are structured and the design processes we use in light of this challenge, a new design problem (or problem space) emerges, one that requires us to focus inward. How do we structure our teams and processes to be resilient? What would happen if we looked at our teams and design process as IA’s, Designers, Researchers? What strategies would we put in place to help them be successful? This talk will look at challenges we face leading, supporting, or simply being a part of design teams creating experiences for user groups with changing technological needs.

Integrating SAP the Java EE Way - JBoss One Day talk 2012hwilming
Cuckoo is an open source Resource Adapter for SAP that is compatible to the Java Connector Architecture (JCA) version 1.5.
It enables developers of Java EE applications to call functions in a SAP backend, making use of Java EE features like Container Managed Transactions and Security.
Hibersap helps developers of Java applications to call business logic in SAP backends. It defines a set of Java annotations to map SAP function modules to Java classes as well as a small, clean API to execute these function modules and handle transaction and security aspects.
Hibersap's programming model is quite similar to those of modern O/R mappers, significantly speeding up the development of SAP interfaces and making it much more fun to write the integration code.

The world of open source is intimidating. Using open source feels like magic. There are these wizards that do this magical work, and you get to use it.
In reality, open source software is written by everyday software engineers like you and me. People who write software with bugs. People who don’t write tests (I’m guilty of this!). People who don’t think of every single edge case. People who don’t always follow best practices (e.g. DRY code).
You can contribute too! You'll get to:
- Learn from others to become better coder.
- Build your brand / reputation. Put it on your resume. Speak at conferences. Get more opportunities.
- Feel good by giving back.
It's easy. Just start by making small changes to open source libraries you already use!

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
