Microgrids and smart grids aim to improve power system reliability and resilience by integrating renewable energy sources, but this presents new challenges for power system protection. Centralized utility grids are being supplemented by distributed generation resources which require localized protection strategies. Modern protection schemes must accommodate bidirectional power flows and the intermittent nature of renewable resources.
