in a pot known as the Turin Erotic Papyrus and it is one of the most controversial
sexual artifacts ever found of the ancient civilizations.
Even by today s norms, the 3,000 years old images of the Papyrus are explicit and
pornographic. If we are able to decode the symbols and codes of Ancient Egypt,
perhaps we can understand what was really happening in the sheets.
Among the collection of artifacts in the Egyptian museum in Turin, Italy, one item
stands out; it is the Papyrus 55001, or more commonly known as the Turin Erotic
Papyrus.
The Papyrus is a scroll painting, supposedly created during the Ramasside period,
discovered in Deir Al Madina and was often referred to as world s first men mag .
Depicted within his fragments are images of twelve ordinary men and women
engaging in explicit sexual positions. The erotic section takes up two thirds of the
Papyrus, while the other one third is the animal section, which depicts animals

According to Mary Midgley, moral isolationism consists in simply denying that we
can never understand any culture except our own well enough to make judgements
about it (Midgley, 322). Midgley argues that moral isolationism is incorrect and it is
illogical. She argues this by saying that it is possible for outsiders to judge foreign
cultures, but moral isolationism is illogical because it excludes any kind of judgment.
She also exposes that judgment is tied to respect and moral isolationism excludes
barriers such as intermixing cultures. I believe that judgment of other cultures is

have their own opinions because judgment goes hand in hand with opinion. However,
when one is judging another culture, they should be aware that their judgment should
be respectful and take moral relativism into retrospect. We have to be ethical and fully
understand that cultures vary when criticizing another culture. If we do not
understand Ruth Benedict s belief of moral relativism, then we are not lawful to
judge another culture.
In her essay, Midgley notes that moral isolationism is incoherent because judgment
is an opinion, and is directly related to respect. It may appeal to some that moral
isolationism is respectful, but it is not because it entirely arrogant. Nobody can
respect what is entirely unintelligible to them...to respect someone, we have to know
enough about him to make a favorable judgement, however general and tentative.
And we do not understand people in other cultures to this extent. Otherwise a great

respect a culture, judgment has to be involved. Due to this discrepancy, moral
isolationism cannot make sense. For a rightful judgment, one should first understand

In Phantasmagoria, one story that the group performed that really stuck out to me
was The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe. To sum the short story up, it
is about a prince named Prospero who hides away in his castle with his wealthy
friends trying to hide from The Red Death , which in the play is shown as a
skeleton like ghoul, but in the actual story, the Red Death plague is personified by
a victim of it. There were many performers in the show, I heard all of their names,
but in truth the names were not important. For the show itself, all the characters
had names, but they acted out and performed poems and short stories, in which
they went under different aliases, so it is difficult to have kept all the names in
check. My favorite aesthetic choice of this performance actually ties all four of the
choices together. It was the Victorian theme of the performance that really caught
my eye and excited me. They played Victorian aged music for certain parts of the
performance, and one of the cast members even played a cello during certain
dramatic monologues. The costumes in this performance reminded me of the gypsies
in the Robert Downey Junior Sherlock Holmes movie, which went so well with the
overall performance. The movement and dance of the performance always was
directly influenced by the Victorian theme as well. In one portion of the play, the
performers waltzed and another performed something of a ballet styled dance, which
