2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
1. POSTER CAMPAIGN PROPOSAL
PROJECT TITLE
Burrrows & Scofield
FORMAT & SIZES
Quad/Quad Crown Theatrical Poster (Landscape)
One Sheet Theatrical Poster (Portrait)
One Sheet Teaser Poster (Portrait)
PURPOSE
Entertain- This will be full of action and include the conventions of an action, such as explosions
and fight scenes.
DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT (GENRE & PLOT ELEMENTS FEATURED)
I am going to produce a film poster for an action movie, which is going to be the back story of
Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows from Prison Break. The film will be set in the year 1990
and will show the brothers Michael and Lincoln living their lives before they end up in prison
together. Michael will be aged 16 and Lincoln will be aged 22 and the film will show Michael as
a well-educated and well-behaved student at school trying to get the best qualifications possible
so his adult life can be better than his terrible childhood, in which his father left and his mother
allegedly passed away. Lincoln on the other hand will in some ways be the binary opposite of his
younger brother Michal and will be in a lot of trouble and involved with criminals such as drug
dealers and murderers and Michael is in some ways the metaphorical older brother to his older
brother. However Lincoln is only doing this to get money and help his younger brother get a good
education. The film will start with their father leaving them when Lincoln is only 6 years old
Michael isn’t even born to join a corrupt government organization known as The Company. The
film will then flash forward to 16 years later where Michael and Lincoln are standing at their
mother’s grave. The film will then show Lincoln getting into fights with criminals, Michael
becoming a well-educated student and the rise of The Company.
OUTLINE OF STYLE
For one of my posters I would have the young versions of Michael and Lincoln at the front, while
the old Michael and Lincoln are faded into the background as a kind of shadow to show that while
they might be free right now, they will soon become prisoners and soon become in serious trouble
and would both eventually start to kill people. Another poster I would have is Michael dressed in
a white shirt and tie which would reflect his lifestyle as a smart and selfless person, while Lincoln
would be dressed in black to show that he is a dangerous person and the colure black could also
show how he would be out at night hidden in the shadows waiting to do something illegal,
however I would still have Lincoln wear a white top underneath the jacket, with a part of the
white top being visible to show that while he is a bad person he isn’t doing this for a selfish
reason. Another poster I would have would be of Michael and Lincoln dressed in the same clothes
as the previous poster but with them standing in a field with bright colures and the two of them
shaking each other’s hand to show that while they’re so different they still have a close brother
relationship.
IMAGE LIST & BRIEF DESCRIPTION
2. POSTER CAMPAIGN PROPOSAL
I would have guns in my film because there will be violence and death in this film and I would also have
explosions as there will be scenes with car chases and car explosions.
FONT LIST & BRIEF DESCRIPTION
TARGET AUDIENCE (AGE, GENDER, LIFESTYLE, INTERESTS, SPENDING
POWER)
My target audience would be for males in their late teens to early 30s.
HOW THE POSTERS WILL APPEAL TO THE AUDIENCE
This will appeal to them as it will fast and will involve a lot of explosions, fight scenes and death,
it will also be seen as relatable in terms of peoples relationship with their brother.
DISTRIBUTION
I would distribute this through a poster by putting the release date on there which tells people
when they can see it, the age rating on here which shows who my target audience is and I would
also put the actors on the poster to tell people who has helped with the film.
MARKETING - HOW & WHERE THE POSTERS WILL BE ADVERTISED
I would put my poster on social media, since that’s where alot of the young people find things out
and I would also have the posters up in cinemas because that way a lot of people will find out
about it after they’ve watched a film.
POSITION IN THE MARKETPLACE
My poster will be similar to the Fast and Furious Hobbs and Shaw poster, where the two main
characters are at the front and then there are other important characters in the background.
