3. PRONOUN SENTENCES
Example: I saw Mady at the beach, she was eating a
sandwich.
- Mady is the subject
- She is referring to Mady
- She is the pronoun
4. ANTECEDENTS
• Antecedents are the nouns that pronouns refer to
Example:
Caitlin was running the track, did you see her?
- Caitlin is the subject
- Her is the pronoun
- Her refers to Caitlin
- Caitlin is the Antecedent
5. HOW ANTECEDENTS ARE UNCLEAR
• Antecedents become unclear when we begin to
have multiple nouns and pronouns
• Bad Example:
Megan and Alyssa went to go shopping. She was happy they
got to go to the store she wanted.
- In this example there are two nouns so we have to use
pronouns at the correct time to help the reader
understand
Good Example:
Megan and Alyssa went to go shopping. Alyssa was happy
that they got to go to the store she wanted.
6. PRONOUN TIPS
• Do not over use pronouns because it causes confusion to
the reader
• Make sure when using a pronoun you have a clear
antecedent
• Do not start a paragraph with a pronoun
• Make sure to use the right pronouns: singular or plural
