Prokaryotic cells have several distinguishing features:
(1) They lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. (2) Their DNA is not associated with histones. (3) They have variations in cell wall composition - peptidoglycan in bacteria and different chemicals in archaea. Prokaryotic cells contain a cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and a single circular chromosome. Some cells also contain structures like flagella, pili, capsules or endospores. Bacteria reproduce through binary fission while also transferring genetic material through transformation, transduction, and conjugation.
