This is a lesson plan based on the 5 E model. It is an activity-based lesson on Conservation of water. Students are supplied with pictures of conservation of water. the students discuss among their groups members and find out the importance of water, how water is wated and how to conserve water.

2. • Water is a natural resource
• Water is important for many activities: for human beings to
survive, agriculture, in industries, construction of buildings,
recreation etc.
• Water has been misused, polluted by human beings
• Measures should be taken to conserve water
Some of the ways of avoiding waste of water :
• Making taps leak proof everywhere
3. Learning points contd….
• Use of bucket instead of water pipe
• Not wasting water while brushing, bathing, washing etc.
• Installing sprinklers in the garden
Some ways of conserving water:
• Constructing dams, rain water harvesting, recycling, modern
irrigation methods like dripping helps in conservation
• Creating awareness among all people on the necessity of
conservation of water.
4. The pupil
• Identifies water as natural resource
• Lists the uses of water
• Recognizes that there is a need for conservation of water
• Lists ways to avoid waste of water
• Analyses the method to conserve water
• Suggests various methods for conservation of water
5. • The class is divided into 6 groups of 5 students each
• Leader notes down the point of discussion of method to conserve water
• Resources used: pictures of water being wasted and how to conserve water
• Pictures to show different methods used in different places to conserve
water
6. • Oral answers of refocusing questions
• The points of discussion recorded in the data sheets provided
• Various suggestions presented by the students for wastage of water
7. 1. Engage
• Teacher greets the students
• Teacher quotes instances of water being wasted in various places.
• Overflowing overhead tanks
• Washing of clothes by people in public places by excessive use of water
• Servants using excess of water while cleaning utensils
8. 2. Explore
• Students are made into groups and leaders are appointed.
• One set of Pictures of various uses of water, how water is wasted and
polluted are given to the students of each group
• Students write down the why water is a necessity; agriculture, industries,
drinking, cooking etc.
• Students are also supplied with pictures of various ways conserving water
• Students discuss and write down the ways to stop wastage of water and
conserve water.
9. 3. Explain
• The students from each group explain what they understood from the
pictures on rotation
• Students from each group reads out one point of discussion i.e.
• Importance of water
• Sources of wastage of water and
• Various methods and steps to control wastage of water.
• Teacher writes down the points on the board.
10. 4. Expand/Elaborate:
• Teacher gives more information of conservation of water while
interacting with the students
• Teacher shows the pictures of various ways of conserving water. For
e.g. Pictures of Dams, rain water harvesting method, water recycling,
drip irrigation in the fields which are as some of the ways to conserve
water.
• Teacher elicits information from students and also explains how these
methods are used.
11. 5. Evaluate
• Teacher evaluates the understanding of the students in the following way
• The various methods of conservation of water told by the students after
discussion during the explain phase.
• Oral answers given by the students to the questions posed by the teacher
throughout the lesson.
