Mr. Kory W. Godfrey
Lamprecht Hall 211A
Dear Mr. Godfrey:
As requested, I am submitting the following proposal to personalize my experience so that I may deepen
my learning. The proposal contains information about aspects of the Alternate Test Option, including the
benefits of customizing a curriculum based on my personal strengths, weaknesses, and interests in
developing project management skills, capabilities, and attitudes.
Project Management is a crucial part of business and is especially important within my desired choice of
study: healthcare administration. We use project management in almost every aspect of daily life as we
seek to ponder, plan, and execute activities to achieve certain results. With my new plans for the
curriculum, you can be confident that these plans will cause minimal effects on the structure of your
course, and will enhance my personal experiences, develop my project management skills, and provide
positive externalities to those affected by the project.
As you study the proposal, please feel free to notify me if you have any questions or need additional
information.
Sincerely,
Jordan S. Cambron
Healthcare Administration Student

Proposal to Complete Alternate Test Option
Basic Proposal
I propose to use this syllabus as a “living syllabus” to outline my ideas for projects and activities that will
help develop my abilities. I plan to focus on a few small projects that will require me to grow more as a
project manager. I plan to actively attend class and participate when appropriate; however, I would like to
avoid participating in assignments that could potentially detract from my field of study. I would prefer to
dismiss smaller assignments and focus my efforts on developing skills. I plan to complete a write-up
summarizing my experiences and the strengths I gained from improving my project management skills. I
currently propose to complete five small “daily activity” projects for the first few weeks, and then use the
skills I learned from those to participate in one larger project. The following list is a list of projects and
methodologies that I hope to learn better as I participate in these projects:
1. Make a meal: I hope to learn more about cost analysis
2. Develop an exercise plan: I hope to focus on waterfall
3. Plan a birthday party: I hope to focus on leadership and delegation
4. Earn my Six Sigma Yellow Belt: I hope to better understand Critical Chain Project Management
5. Edit this living proposal: I hope to work on the spiral methodology
Final Project: I plan to lead a group of friends and others in the Veteran’s History Project.
The current version of the CIT 380 curriculum has many great elements that I believe should remain in
the program. I believe the assignments are useful, but not necessary; hence, I propose to not participate in
them. I propose to choose specific project management elements to focus on while working to complete
my projects. I will briefly address: (1) the background for this proposal, (2) the new projects being
proposed, (3) the benefits of implementing these projects as alternatives to tests, (4) a timeline to
complete these projects, and (5) a project agenda.
Background
I enrolled in Project Management and attended two class periods last semester and then dropped the class
because I had an excessive amount of credits. The class is required for my major and after gaining some
exposure to what the format of the class is, I had a better understanding of what I might want to do as an
alternative. I recently transferred from BYU to pursue a degree in healthcare administration (a degree not
offered at BYU). With the liberty of the alternate test option, I realized I can customize my syllabus to fit
my needs. I strongly believe this will allow me to improve as a project manager. I want to do things that
2
not only benefit me personally, but also those around me. I plan to be proactive and be someone that acts
and isn’t acted upon.
New Projects
My proposal is to participate in five smaller projects throughout the beginning of the semester, and one
larger one toward the end of the semester.
Make a Meal
The first project I want to complete is making a meal. I want to plan out the costs using an excel
spreadsheet and determine the logistics of the project in order to be cost effective, while still maintaining
quality. I want to learn how I can make a meal that is filling, and also cost effective. I am hoping to
develop skills in (1) budgeting and (2) maximizing value while lowering costs.
Develop an Exercise Plan
The second project I want to work on is to develop an exercise plan. I want to try to work on planning out
the different exercises I want to participate in each day. I want to develop skills in the methodology of
waterfall. I hope to set requirements, design the workout, implement a start date, verify the effectiveness
of the project, and maintain consistency. I hope that studying more about waterfall while making the
project will help me become a better project manager.
Plan a Birthday Party
The third project I want to work on is planning my birthday party. I want to focus on leadership for this
event. I plan to recruit my roommate to help me plan for food supplies for those who attend the party,
invitation ideas or suggestions, and time management at the party venue. I hope I can delegate and lead
others to help me get tasks done. As a result, I hope to gain better characteristics of a leader.
Earn my Six Sigma Yellow Belt
The fourth project I want to work on is earning my yellow belt in Six Sigma. This will take roughly 6-8
hours to complete as I watch videos and learn more about Six Sigma. I hope to learn about critical chain
project management and understand the project necessities to complete the training in two weeks. I want
to take the test after I participate in the training and earn my certification.
Edit the Living Proposal
The fifth project I want to work on would be to continue editing this proposal. I want to keep this a living
proposal and make sure that I try my best to stick to the schedule I have made for myself. If one thing
doesn’t work out, I want to be able to keep the liberty and possibly change things so that I can still be
developing skills. Essentially, I don’t want this proposal to be final or set in stone.
The Final Project
The final project I want to do is to participate in the Veteran’s History Project. I worked on this project as
a youth and it was very beneficial to learn, but I want to involve more people this time. I want to invite
around 15 people to come to a nursing home nearby or in Idaho Falls to interview veterans. I want to
record their stories and then send them to the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. I plan to use the
skills I have learned from my other small projects to complete this project toward the end of the semester.
3
Benefits
 Guarantee exposure to new areas of project management that can help me grow as a project
manager
 Develop new skills of leadership that will prepare me for future occupations
 Benefit and serve other individuals in the world who are struggling
 Benefit students who might be doing research on veterans
 Motivate me to be proactive about project management
 Allow me to be in a richer learning environment with customized projects
 Allow me to surpass my presumed capabilities and make weaknesses become strengths
Time Line
To disrupt the normal work procedures as little as possible, I propose to implement the new plans on
April 25. This will allow for a few days of preparation to begin working on scheduling for activities and
assignments listed in the “Alternate Test Option” agenda.
Conclusion
I strongly believe this program will allow me to focus on becoming better. I will not be restricted by a
certain syllabus and these projects will allow me to think outside the box. I know that higher quantities of
smaller work projects will ultimately yield better results. For this purpose, I plan to work on five small
projects and one large one that will allow me to learn many new things. I believe if I set deadlines and
work consistently and effectively, I will be able to avoid the so-called “natural man” syndrome. I want to
provide quality and gain knowledge of project management that will last for years to come.
