2. This is my magazine that I created when starting the course.
Pros
There is a consistent house style which includes
colours, font, language, image shot type
The layout is structured, no clutter- simple to read
It is clearly for a range of age groups to read through
Based on school, content, images, language, context
Cons
Not enough cover lines, not interesting to look at
Main audience is school children- needs more colour in
images
More interesting cover lines for younger age groups
There is not left third on this front cover, instead the
magazine is composed so that they are along the right hand
side which is in contrast to the Pop magazine because that
has a left third with only a few cover lines and images along
the right hand side.
The school magazine has it’s main image composed to the
left and into the middle whereas the pop magazine has the
image acting as the background of the full page, this looks
more effective because it shows this is the cover story or
main feature
This magazine has it’s cover story just underneath the
masthead so this is the second thing you see whereas the pop
magazine has it’s cover story in the centre to create a more
interesting route of the eye
3. Pros
The masthead is big, bright and clear and sets the
overall tone of the magazine
Main image is strong and is welcoming to the key
demographic
There is a consistent house style including
colours, language, font
It is structured and appears cluttered to show there is
a lot of interesting content
It appears strongly feminine, has a clear target
audience
Cons
Very boxy, contains too many background boxes
Possibly use a more mid shot image, overpowering
Have a stronger left third, one more cover line with
image
This magazine consists of a main image which acts as
the background, a left third for selling purposes, a
strong mast head and a selling line across the top to
promote its popularity. The school magazine does not
have these features which is mainly because it does
not need them as a ‘school magazine. This magazine
also has extra cover lines without a background
which show that there is a large content inside this
magazine
4. This is the school magazine contents page which is very
bare and only consists of the structured contents under
each subtitle.
Pros
Composed so it is easy to read- contents list all down the
left side
Structured so that it is clear and simple
Features headlines/subtitles to break the content of the
magazine down
House style is remains clear
throughout, font, colours, language, context
Cons
Boring- no images, lack of colour
Very short, needs more content to show that this magazine
is worth reading
Needs more content on the students- to cater for the
parents who wish to know about the partaking of students
This contents page has its list of content along the left hand
side which means it is structured well and composed so
that it is clear, has a clear route of the eye and is simple to
read. The colours used are unisex and therefore this allows
the magazine to be flexible towards both genders. The
subtitles allow the content to be broken down into separate
sections which makes it an easy read and therefore is
appropriate for younger students.
5. Pros
Consistent house style- colours, language, font, images
Structured into boxes and has subtitles/subheadings
Contains five images interesting to look at, sells the
magazine
Appeals to females, continues a consistent feminine vibe
The cover story is highlighted, structures the important
articles and makes them bold
Cons
Very white, needs more colour, less black as black
connotes the wrong feeling across the magazine
More images of girl bands to highlight the target
audience
More contents in another box with a different heading
This contents page is well structured within the boxes
which makes it an easy read for its key demographic and
it is able to cater for a range of ages. It has a consistent
house style which is more ranged than the school
magazine and this is directed at one specific gender in
contrast to the school magazine,
This contents page is more interesting to look at because
it contain a number of various images, which are bright
and feminine and relate to pop music whereas the school
magazine has no images relating to the context which
makes it appear dull and boring for its audience
particularly younger children.
