2. Q Magazine
This is the ‘Q’ magazine, as you can see, it is clearly laid out in a
formal fashion, the masthead is positioned in the top left hand
corner, making the house style consistent. The colour scheme,
that is used which consists of red, white and black makes it
more appealing to the eye. The contents page, is laid out in 3
columns which creates a sense of order, it makes the stories and
features easier to understand and read. There are also 4 images
clearly shown on the page, this adds to the effectiveness of the
page, it makes the page more eye-catching as it is not just filled
with text but images to balance it out. The masthead and
‘CONTENTS’ are in the font that is serif whilst the rest of the
text is san-serif, the contrast of the font also makes it stand out,
as it is versatile. Magazine indent is also evident, the letter ‘Q’
is positioned in the bottom right corner, this makes the reader
know that it is from the ‘Q’ magazine. It also gives it a unique
selling point. The page numbers are clearly shown through the
bold font and the use of the colour black, this colour connotes
the demand and importance of the page reference.

3. NME
The masthead is on the page, this is to remind the
audience of the magazine they are reading. Yet again,
this page is structured in an ordered fashion, this makes it
clear and easy to understand. There is one main image on
the page, this is a fairly big image that is obviously one
that is featured in the magazine, it doesn’t look prepared
for as the 2 men are from a band called Kasabian, this
suggests that the magazine will be filled with images that
are backstage behind the scenes. the main colours used
on the page are: red, black, white and yellow. All 4 of the
colours contrast together making it stand out and more
appealing to the eye. The majority of the text is written
in capital letters, this is to reinforce the importance of
what is written, this also adds to the effectiveness of the
page. Graphic features are used which also appeals to the
audience and gives it a more modern and youthful look.
Coloured text is used for page numbers, bold text is used
for the titles of the articles or stories and smaller text
gives a brief overview, this is beneficial as it helps to
identify what someone wants to read with a brief glance.

4. WE <3 POP
The masthead yet again is featured on the page, this is
used as a reminder to the reader. The colour scheme
that is used are: blue, orange and white. These three
colours all blend well together. There is also a young and
youthful feel about the contents page, it really attracts
the audience directly. The page numbers are clearly
shown on the image, this makes the reader aware of
where to look inside the magazine. There is a medium
shot image of two female artists this is probably the
main cover line that was featured on the front page. The
page number and website appear at the bottom of the
page, there is also a pull quote of an article that is
featured, this makes it stand out and makes the reader
curious as to why it was said. There is the editor’s note
feature at the left hand side of the page, this makes it
more personal and is directly aimed at the reader, this
makes the magazine more friendly. There is a large bold
heading that is used, this makes it more appealing and
catches the reader’s eye immediately as it is one of the
first things that the reader spots.

5. CONCLUSION

From this piece of research I have concluded that, all the mastheads or the names of
the magazines always appears on the contents page, this is used to indicate the house
style that is being maintained. Also, there is usually 3 or more colours that are used on
the page, this is to make it stand out and not look to wild.
The magazine indent is also evident on the page, this is to make sure that the
audience/reader is aware of where to find the magazine online or if they want to
subscribe to the magazine through social networking sites etc.


Page numbers are also shown clearly, this is to make sure that the reader can quickly
spot the page that they are interested and flick to it without any confusion

This has helped me, as I will be implemented the same conventions in my own
contents page, this will enable me to get the best possible magazine.
