This document summarizes a research paper that used GPS data from taxicabs in Beijing to detect flawed urban planning and traffic problems. The researchers partitioned a city map into regions using major roads, and identified region pairs that were frequently traveled between across multiple days as indicators of flawed planning, such as a newly built road or subway line not effectively addressing traffic. Computational analysis of the taxi data from 2009 to 2010 found traffic conditions in Beijing worsened, which the authors attributed to more private car ownership.
