PROFINET Network
Components
PROFINET Networks consist of several discrete items
of apparatus:-
IO Controllers (IOC’s) – The devices actually
controlling the communications – these are
usually PLC’s.
IO Devices (IOD’s) – These are the plant-based
devices that the IOC is communicating with.
They may be remote IO, Invertor drives,
encoders etc.
Switches – These are used to connect the IOC’s
with the IOD’s.
Gateways – These are used to connect to other
network types, e.g. PROFIBUS, AS-I, CAN or IOT
(OPC-UA/MQTT)
Monitoring Tools – Essential for the qualification
and support of your network

Gateways, Couplers and
Routers
A PROFINET Gateway is a physical device that facilitates
communication between two industrial networks, one of which
will be a PROFINET network.
On the PROFINET side, the gateway will appear as an IO Device
and will have a GSDML file, to allow it to be incorporated into
the hardware configuration of an IO Controller (PLC), and a
PROFINET name.
Gateways are available for a wide range of network
combinations including PROFIBUS (DP), PROFIBUS (PA), AS-i,
CanBUS, IO Link and many more.
PROFINET-PROFINET Gateways are more commonly referred to
as Couplers.
In addition to connecting to other industrial networks there will
often be a need for connecting a PROFINET Network to an IT
network for support (Router)and IIoT purposes.

PN-PN Coupler Configuration
The GSDML file of the coupler needs to be
added to the hardware configuration of the
IO Controller in each network.
The device must be given a device name and
IP address.
The modules on each side appear as inputs
and outputs of varying sizes.
Output channels on one side must match
input channels on another.

PROFINET – PROFIBUS DP
Gateways
A PROFINET to PROFIBUS DP Gateways facilitates bi-directional
communication between a PROFINET Network and a PROFIBUS DP
network.
It will be supplied with a GSDML file and a GSD file for
incorporation into the respective Hardware Configuration of the
IO Controller and PROFIBUS Master respectively.
The PROFIBUS DP side of the gateway will need a slave address.

PROFINET – PROFIBUS PA
Gateways
A PROFINET to PROFIBUS PA Gateways facilitates bi-directional
communication between a PROFINET Network and a PROFIBUS PA
network.
Here, the Gateway is acting as a PA Master on the PA side.
The configuration of these devices is a little more time-
consuming as it requires the creation on an application-specific
GSDML file.

PN-PB PA Configuration
An application-specific GSDML file needs to be created for
inclusion in the Hardware Configuration of the PROFINET IO
Controller. This maps PA GSD files with PN slots.

Actuator-Sensor Interface (AS-i)
A single AS-i master controlling up to 31 slaves.
Each slave can have up to 4 digital inputs and 4
digital outputs giving a maximum of 124 digital
inputs plus 124 digital outputs.
The AS-i bus runs at a fixed speed of 167 kbit/s.
Connection using any topology with up to 100m
of unshielded, untwisted two-core cable. Yellow
flat profiled or round cable with 1.5mm2
stranded conductor.
Up to two repeaters can be used to extend the
network over 100m (segmentation).
The network must incorporate a special AS-i
power supply, which supplies power to all
devices on a segment. Up to 8A can be drawn
from the supply.
PROFINET Gateways © Control Specialists Ltd – June 2020 Page 17
PROFINET – AS-i Gateways
PROFINET to AS-i Gateways facilitate bi-directional
communications between a PROFINET network and an AS-I
Network.
They are available as a stand-alone PN-AS-i Master or as a
module that plugs into a PLC rack.
Stand-alone devices must be supplied with a GSDML file for
inclusion in the Hardware Configuration of the IO Controller
on the PROFINET side.
PROFINET Gateways © Control Specialists Ltd – June 2020 Page 18
Actuator-Sensor Interface (AS-i)
PROFINET Gateways © Control Specialists Ltd – June 2020 Page 19
PN-AS-I Configuration
AS-I Gateways are easier to configure
than those associated with higher-
level networks like PROFINET and
PROFIBUS.
This is because AS-i devices do not
have any form of device description
file.
Stand—alone PROFINET-AS-i gateways
work on the principle of mapping a
module slot number on the PN side
with an AS-i address (1-31).
PLC AS-I modules simply need to know
the number if individual AS-i devices
they will communicate with and the
address of each device.
PROFINET Gateways © Control Specialists Ltd – June 2020 Page 20
IO-Link
IO-Link is a point-point digital
communications network infrastructure for
field devices.
By definition it has a similar target group as
AS-i.
The point-point link is limited to 20m
Each device has a device description file
known as an IODD and is used for device
configuration and parameterisation
purposes.
PROFINET Gateways © Control Specialists Ltd – June 2020 Page 21
PROFINET – IO-LINK Gateways
PROFINET to IO-Link Gateways facilitate bi-directional
communications between a PROFINET network and an IO-Link
Network.
They are available as a stand-alone device or as a module that
plugs into a PLC rack.
Stand-alone devices must be supplied with a GSDML file for
inclusion in the Hardware Configuration of the IO Controller
on the PROFINET side.

IIoT Gateways
IIoT Gateways (Industrial Internet
of Things) are devices that
facilitate the transfer of non-real
time data between an operational
network (OT) like PROFINET and
IT network.
The main uses of IIoT is either for
machine-machine or machine-
cloud data communication.
Two of the most common
protocols currently used by IIoT
applications are OPC-UA (Unified
Architecture) and MQTT (Message
Queuing Telemetry Transport)
Many PLCs and PROFINET
diagnostic tools support OPC-UA
and MQTT.

PROFINET Routers
PROFINET is a non-routable
protocol.
This means that it is not possible to
achieve real-time communications
between devices on different
subnets.
Routers, with an integrated firewall,
can play an important part in the
support of PROFINET networks by
allowing secure access from an IT
network.
Network Address Translation (NAT)
can be used to map fixed IP
addresses in the IT network with
specific IP addresses in the
PROFINET network, e.g. web servers
of PLC, switches etc.
