1. Fanzine Production Process
I beganmy fanzine byskippingtothe firstpage,as I wouldleave the frontcoverlater.Myplan
showsa single A5sheetwithmultiple imagessurroundedbytext.These wouldlayoutof the most
commoncausesof the apocalypse. Asthese were all fictional,Ineededtofindimagesof the
differenthazards.AsIwantedthe aestheticof myfanzine tofeel ruggedandunprofessional as
thoughit wasthrowntogetherina hurry,I thoughtthat drawingthe imageswouldbe a muchbetter
optiontoachieve this.
I startedwiththe volcanoand foundanimage of one eruptingonline.IresizedthisinPhotoshopand
free-handdrewanoutline aroundit.Ithenmovedittothe side (asshownbelow) sothatI could
observe the wayinwhichthe coloursblendedtogether.Iaddedabase layerof a deepbrown-grey
colourusinga specificbrushwiththe opacityandflow reducedtohalf.Thismade itso that the
colourcouldbuildupovertime as it would be whenpaintingoncanvasorpaper.I enjoyedthis
effectandfeltthatit wouldgive the arta greatersense of depth.
To create the flowingriversof lavaI wouldselectadeepredandbuilduponthis.Iwouldthen
choose a brightorange and graduallymove towardsalightbeige.Ithenselectedthe colourmixer
brushwiththe defaultsettingsandshiftedthe ‘paint’intothe correctformas well asblendingthe
edgesof eachof the colours.
I repeatedthisoverthe entire mountainandwaspleasedwiththe result.Tocreate the ash cloud
above ita performedasimilarprovesthoughleavingthe strokesof the brushlessrefined.This
create a jaggedandroughappearance that representedthe swellingof the airborne ash.Iaddeda
little orange touchtothe parts nearestthe magma to give the impressionthatthe lightproducedby
the moltenrockwas projectingontothe cloud,similartothe photograph.
At a laterdate I addeda backgroundof a smog-filledskywithsmall,glowinghighlightsaroundthe
base of the volcano.
To draw the zombie,Ifollowedasimilarprocess.Idrew anoutline of the image shownonthe right
and I moveditto letme draw myown interpretationof it.Iusedsimilarclothingastothe zombie in
the photographand the wayin whichbloodsplatteredthe face.Tocreate the linesof the shirtI used
darkershadesof grey andmixeditwiththe otherbrush.I onlydrew the top half of the personas I
wouldhide the missinglegswiththe bordersof the photographonce onthe page.Once again,I
addeda blurrybackgroundat a laterstage once I was happywiththe look.

2. The image belowshowsaninitial mock-upof the firstpage.Includedisthe ‘photo’of the zombie
and the volcano.Ioriginallywantedthe volcanotobe the mainbackgroundof the page,the other
elementslaidontop of the smokybackgroundthatwouldeventuallyaccompanyit. A placeholder
image of a meteorisshowninthe topright andbelow thisan image of an ‘EMP’ exploding.The page
can be seentobe dividedintwo,the right-side presentingnothingbutaneffect thatI was
consideringusingforthe EMPartwork.
Belowisan image of a near complete planof the firstpage.The mostsignificantchange isthe
backgroundof the page whichhasset the designscheme forthe restof the fanzine.Itisa fictional
actionplanmade by the governmentinresponse toanatural disasteras thisisa relevantpiece of
documentationforthe page.Itisheadedbyboththe logoof the governmentandthe Ministryof
Defence toincrease authenticity.The actual textof the documentistakenfrom‘The NationSecurity
Strategy’andI usedthisto my advantage,leavingkeywordsshowingthroughmyowntext.
The volcanoimage isnow ina polaroidframe andthe zombie image hasa background.To increase
authenticityof bothIaddeda small amountof the GaussianBluras thoughthe camera had not been
focusedatthe time.
The texton thispage has beenwrittenusingthe BrushTool througha graphicstablet.Thisisto give
it a scrapbookfeel,asthoughwrittenfirsthandbysomeone with experience.

3. Belowisan unfinishedversionof anewspaperfrontpage thatwasto become the backgroundof the
adjacentpage.Thisdepictschaosand destructionandoverall givesthe effectof anoncoming
apocalypse withthe page beforehand.
I usedan existingnewspaperasa reference andstudiedthe waythe textwaslaidoutand how the
imageswere positioned.Ididnothave a creative name forthe newspapersoleftitas itcan be seen
below,thoughthiswaslaterhiddenbythe title of the page.
I createdthe titlesof the articleshopingtoreplicate the waythattheyare actuallywritten.The text
isfrom the BrexitWikipediaasthiswouldmostlikelybe the mainnewsevenwithanapocalypsein
the making.I tookan image of a riotfromthe internet.

4. Belowisa laterimage.The mostnoticeable difference isthe change inthe colourof the background.
To make it lookweatheredIaddedastainedpapereffectandchangedthe colourof the textso that
it appearedmore yellowandfaded.

5. Once the backgroundwas complete,Iaddedmyowntextacross the twomaincolumns.I didthisby
usingthe Brush Tool to scribble overthe existingtextandusedagraphicstablettowrite my own.I
coveredmostof the textwithadditionalelementsbutleftthe mainarticle headersvisible asthey
toldthe story.I addedanotherphoto,an image of emergencyservicesgatheredinastreet.Iaddeda
filtertothe image so thatit appearedasthoughtakenon an Infraredcamera.I addeda drop
shadowandplaced the image on an angle whichgave itthe appearance that ithad been
haphazardlydroppedontothe page,asthoughevidence hadbeencollectedanddumpedhere.
I addedanotherlayerwhichheldatexture thatresembleddirtymarksonpaper.I loweredthe
opacityand itaddedto the aging processfurther.Ididnot wantto go too far andmake it seemtoo
old,justweatheredandbattered.Iaddedbloodstainsandbloodyfingerprintstothe page which
helpedthisaesthetic,aswell asacoffee stain.The overall effectwasexactlywhatIwanted:a
weatherednewspaperpage brimmingwithnotesandotherevidence of the oncomingapocalypse.
I actually wantedtocreate my ownphotographon thispage and I experimentedwithcreatinga
thermal image butitdidnot workas I hadfirsthoped.Itwas a shame to use a third-party
photographbutI wantedthissort of photoincluded.

6. These twoattemptsshow the processesItriedinorderto achieve asimilareffecttothe photograph
but neitherwere fruitful. Ithinkthatoptingforthe photographwaseasierandlookedbetterbutI
believethatIshouldhave spentmore time tryingtofinda wayto reproduce it.Thiswouldhave fit
the aestheticmuchbetter.
Withthe firsttwopagescomplete Imovedontothe next,the BugOut Bag page.I had an ideaof
howI was goingto achieve this.Iwantedittolookas thoughsomeone hadlaidouttheiritemson
the ground.I startedby makingthe individual elementsthatwouldbe needed.Ifoundimagesonline
and illustratedthem.Iaimedfora similarartstyle tomy previousdrawings,sketchyandhurriedly
paintedasthoughdrawn ina hurry and withcrude tools.

10. Once I had createdthese elementsIbegantolaythemout accordingly.Iwantedtocreate an effect
as thoughthe contentsof the BOB hadbeensplayedoutona surface.I tookinspirationfroma
popularsurvival videogame, TheForestwhichfeaturessomethingsimilar.
Thisuseda tarpaulinas the backdropand so I replicatedthisinmyownwork.I likedthisbecause it
appearedasthoughthe survivorhadunpackedhisthingsandlaidthemouton the ground.

11. I likedthisideabutIwanteditto feel more groundedanddirty.Ifoundimagesof leavesandsoil
online andaddedthis.Ialsofounda photographof a sandy surface andoverlaidthissothat itgave
the aestheticIwas tryingto achieve.
A by-productof the grittytexture wasthatit showedmore predominatelywhenoveradarker
colour.I usedthisto myadvantage and scribbledmarksinspecificareaswhichwouldlateractas
backgroundsfortext. InadditiontothisI addeda radial gradientthat focusedlighttothe centre of
the page.Thismakesthe page lookmuchdarker aroundthe edges.

12. My nextpage wasbasedaroundrepurposingoldandabandonedtechnology,primarilyvehicle parts.
For thisI wantedtoinclude aMad Max style vehicle tobringthe page intothe same contextasthe
restof the fanzine. Ifoundanimage of a car fromthe latestfilmandtracedan outline of it.I
illustrateditandusedthe coloursasa reference.
Thisthenwas putinto a polaroid-stylephotographandthe restof the page was constructed.Itook a
blue backgroundandindividuallyplacedthe crosshatchinglines.Ithenaddedacrumpledpaper
effectanda gradientthatdrewthe eye tothe centre.I addedimagesof car parts and alteredthem
witha filtersotheyappearedtobe in the classicblueprintstyleof drawing.A greybrushwasusedto
draw oil or grease marksontothe page as backgroundsforthe text.
