Production Brief:
Contractual: “Pertaining to, or secured by a contract.”For instance when doing something for
another company, a contract will often be used to explain the terms and conditions of what
has to be done. This contract will explain all the legal requirements.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/contractual
This would help with my communication skills because it teaches me how to work with others
to create the best outcome I can, whilst sticking to the rules they have set. It also helps me to
be professional when dealing with the legal requirements of the company.
It will help me with my time management because when you are contracted to do something
there will be specific deadline times on which you will have to complete your project by.
Therefore I will have to manage my time in order to fit everything in.
As for the technical side of things, actually making my project will help that as I will be using
various different types of software to complete this.
If you complete this to the best of your ability then you are more likely to be trusted by
companies which will help in the future for your career and future employers.
Negotiated:“To confer with another or others in order to come to terms or reach an
agreement”; For example if you and another person/company did not agree on an idea, you
would discuss this until the problem was resolved. This is negotiating.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Negotiated
Negotiating will help my communication skills because it teaches how to argue something in a
professional way. It also shows you’re able to get your point across correctly.
For time management I would keep a production diary or log of negotiated things so I could
keep on top of everything that was happening.
This would help my technical skills because the skills I pick up now can be used throughout
whatever I have to do in the future. It will also help my career progression because being able
to negotiate things is an important skill that will be needed in later life to go further in life.
Formal: “Following or being in accord with accepted forms, conventions, or regulations”. This
would mean acting in a certain way to adhere to the situation you were in. For example, would
most likely hold a meeting before the brief was officially written up to discuss different aspects
of it. Being able to be formal will help my communication skills because it shows you how to
speak to people in a professional way in a setting that you wouldn’t usually be in. It helps time
management skills because in a formal environment there will be deadlines and schedules
that need to be stuck too, and if these are not met then you’re not going to look good.
Olivia Berry
As for technical skills, being formal is a new type and it is good to know what different clients
need for different things. Being able to work to a formal brief will help in career progression for
when there is a time you’re going to need it.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/formal
Informal: “Not being in accord with prescribed regulations or forms; unofficial”. Informal is the
opposite of the above; formal. This means that you are less likely to be finding yourself with a
serious brief. It is more likely to be spoken – a face to face discussion of the requirements of
the chosen products ended with an agreement.
This helps with communication skills because it helps when learning to be friendly and chatty,
whilst still being professional as it’s still a work environment. It helps time management
because even though things aren’t as serious, things still need to be finished and this teaches
you not to get too relaxed in your current situations.
It helps with the technical skills by letting you have your own interpretation of things and
letting yourself get a little more creative with what you’re doing – you have a lot more say on
what the final outcome will be. This is good for career progression because it shows that
you’re able to be creative yourself and come up with your own ideas.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/informal
Commission: “a duty or task committed to a person or group to perform”. This is where a
larger organisation will get others to do their work for them. For instance a big company like
ITV or the BBC will take on others to make relevant things for their channels. This is good for
communication because it teaches you how to talk to larger and higher up the scale groups
than yourself, showing that you can be professional in a serious situation. It also helps
because there will be team work involved. Time management is used in this because when
there is more than one person working to a brief, you’re all going to have different deadlines
to work too. Technical skills will be helped because as there is more than one person working
on the brief, they can help you by pushing you into trying new things and being more creative.
This helps career progression because wen future employers are looking; they like to see that
you are able to work effectively in groups.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/commission
Tender: “A written offer to contract goods or services at a specified cost or rate; a bid.”This is
where numerous companies will bid to complete the given brief. This will help with
communication skills because you will have to listen to a range of different bids, and decide
yourself which is the best for you. This is good for time management because you will have to
make time to listen to all these different companies and then decide on which one you want to
work for. This helps with technical skills because depending who you choose; you will have to
adhere to the technical skills they want you to use. This helps career progression because it
shows you’re able to listen to people and then decide what is best for you.

Co-operative: “Of, relating to, or formed as an enterprise or organization jointly owned or
managed by those who use its facilities or services:”This is where a few companies will use
different services to complete the brief. This is good for communication skills because it
shows you can communicate with various companies whilst working to a brief. It helps time
management because you will have to all work to different schedules and deadlines, and this
means all working together to make sure they are met.
It helps with technical skills because you will be able to pick up new skills of different things,
and see what other companies do in their work. This is good for career progression because
team work is essential when trying to make a career for yourself.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/cooperative
Competition: “Rivalry between two or more businesses striving for the same customer or
market”This is when a brief is given and lots of companiescompete with each other to be the
complete that brief to the best of their ability. This helps with communication skills because it
helps when still being professional whilst competing for something which can often be found
hard. This helps time management because you’re always going to have to be ahead of the
game if someone else is striving to beat you to the final product. Technical skills will be
improved because you will push yourself to new limits in order to ‘beat the competition’, and
this will improve career progression because it shows future employers that you were better
and more advanced in different things that other companies are.
