2. Bell Ringer 04/21/14
Essential Question:
If two different cells each contain DNA,
how can one cell be classified as
prokaryotic and the other as
eukaryotic?
Discuss with a teammate and record
your answer the on bottom of page 7.

3. Objective: B4.A
We will examine the
similarities and differences
between prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells.
5. Cell Theory says that….
1. All living things are made of cells.
2. Cells are the basic units of
structure and function in all living
things.
3. New cells are only made from
existing cells.
7. These are two distinct types of cells
with STRUCTURAL differences.
Prokaryotes
Bacteria
Eukaryotes
Animal Plant
8. Traits of Prokaryotes:
(pro-care-ee-ohts)
1. They do not have a nucleus, and
their genetic material is not stored
in the nucleus.
2. They have some organelles(
structures), but not many.
3. They are less complicated that
eukaryotes.
4. All bacteria are prokaryotes.
9. Traits of Eukaryotes:
(you-care-ee-othts)
1. They all have a nucleus
where the genetic
material of the cell is
stored.
2. They have many organelles
that work together to help
the cell function.
10. More traits of Eukaryotes:
(you-care-ee-othts)
3. Eukaryotic cells are much more
complex then prokaryotic cells.
4. They can be just one cell or can
make up more complex multi-
cellular organisms.
5. All plants, animals, fungi, and
protists are eukaryotic cells.
11. Organelles in Common
Both cells contain the following structures:
1. Cell wall
2. Cell Membrane
3. Ribosomes
4. Plasma Membrane
5. Cytoplasm
6. Flagella or cilia
7. Nucleus
8. Mitochondria
9. Vacuoles
13. Homeostasis
Both prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells maintain
homeostasis.
The ability of a cell to maintain
internal equilibrium by
adjusting its internal
processes.
14. Think – Pair - Share
What do you think is the
main difference between
a prokaryotic cell and a
eukaryotic cell?
15. Get into designated
groups: Turn to page 7
in your summit review
book. Read and follow
listed instructions
covered in questions 1-7
on pages 8-11.
16. Product
What do I need to remember
about prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells.
Discuss with your teammate
and record your answer in “I
Need to Remember” section
on page 11 of student summit
review book.
