Privilege Walk
9/18/2015
On Wednesday as a class we went outside and did an activity called the
Privilege walk. We got into our small groups and stood shoulder to shoulder, and
waited to hear certain scenarios and if it pertained to us we either had to take a step
back or take a step forward.
This exercise was an eye opening experience for me because it showed how
much diversity we have throughout the university. Not everyone comes from a
wealthy family and you truly don’t know what struggles people are going through
on a day to day basis. Whether it’s financial or personal this exercise showed me
that you can’t just a person without knowing their story first. The exercise made me
feel a little weird because every scenario that came up about coming from a wealthy
family I stepped forward and I feel like everyone looked at me and people were
judging.
My thoughts while doing this exercise made me realize how lucky I was
growing up in the home I did. Seeing my fellow classmates during this exercise made
me truly think about life as a whole and that not everything comes easy to them.
Some people have to work hard to get where they want to go.
This experience has taught me to not take what I have for granted. From now
on I will not judge people so easily. With the information that I have gained from
this situation, I can teach others to not judge someone so quickly because you don’t
know that person’s situation.
