Globally, measles cases and deaths have been increasing in recent years, with over 6.9 million cases and 130,000 deaths reported in 2021 alone. Pakistan has experienced measles outbreaks as well, reporting over 3270 cases in the last 12 months, the 5th highest in the world. Complications from measles such as pneumonia and encephalitis are common, especially in children under 5, and cause significant illness and death. While vaccine coverage in Pakistan has improved over time, it remains below the 95% threshold needed to prevent outbreaks.
