Frequency and Risk-Factors Analysis of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Bali-CattleUniversitasGadjahMada
Cattle are known as the main reservoir of zoonotic agents verocytotoxin producing Escherichia coli. These bacteria are usually isolated from calves with diarrhea and / or mucus and blood. Tolerance of these agents to the environmental conditions will strengthen of their transmission among livestock. A total of 238 cattle fecal samples from four sub-districts in Badung, Bali were used in this study. Epidemiological data observed include cattle age, sex, cattle rearing system, the source of drinking water, weather, altitude, and type of cage floor, the cleanliness of cage floor, the slope of cage floor, and the level of cattle cleanliness. The study was initiated by culturing of samples onto eosin methylene blue agar, then Gram stained, and tested for indole, methyl-red, voges proskauer, and citrate, Potential E.coli isolates were then cultured onto sorbitol MacConkey agar, and further tested using O157 latex agglutination test and H7 antisera. Molecular identification was performed by analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, and epidemiological data was analyzed using
STATA 12.0 software. The results showed, the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in cattle at Badung regency was 6.30% (15/238) covering four sub districts i.e. Petang, Abiansemal, Mengwi, and Kuta which their prevalence was 8.62%(5/58), 10%(6/60), 3.33%(2/60), and 3.33(2/60)%, respectively. The analysis of 16S rRNA gene confirmed of isolates as an E. coli O157:H7 strain with 99% similarities. Furthermore, the risk factors analysis showed that the slope of the cage floor has a highly significant effect (P<0.05) to the distribution of infection. Consequently, implementing this factor must be concerned in order to decrease of infection.

A cross sectional study was conducted from November 2015 to April 2016 in Jimma zone of Oromiya region, to determine the prevalence of abomasal nematodes of sheep slaughtered at Jimma municipal abattoir. A systematic random sampling technique was applied to select the sheep. Abomasum of sheep was incised following the standard procedures. A total of 387 abomasums were incised and using standards of parasite identification methods two genera of nematodes were identified with an overall prevalence of 78.29%. The prevalence of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus axei was 66.67% and 53.5%, respectively. A statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) was not found between origins in prevalence of these parasites. However, a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) was noticed between the level of the prevalence and different body conditioned animals. The highest prevalence was in poor body condition (97.26%). The overall mean worm count was 5334.97 and the mean worm count of specific nematode were 675.19 and 690.82 for Hemonchus and T. axei, respectively. The great majority of the infected sheep was with light, moderate and heavy degree of infestation. The current study epitomized that the prevalence of nematodiasis was high and consequently; sustainable control programs should warrant.

Interepidemic Seroepidemiological Survey of Rift Valley Fever in Garissa, KenyaMark Nanyingi
Background: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that is caused by phlebovirus and transmitted primarily by aedes mosquitoes. RVF outbreaks have led to significant effects to human and animal health in the Horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula. The economic impact of 1997-98, 2000 and 2006-2007 outbreaks due to massive livestock abortions, deaths, acute human illness and deaths was estimated at over $ 500 million. We hypothesize there is consistent virus circulation in RVF endemic areas of Northern Kenya and RVF epidemics have potential associations with environmental and climatic parameters. The objective of this study was to detect circulation of RVFV in goats, sheep and cattle in Garissa County, Kenya during the inter-epidemic period (IEP).
Methodology: We performed a cross-sectional surveillance of ruminants in RVF high risk areas of Garissa County, Kenya. Periodic blood sampling of sheep, goats and cattle was done in March 2012 and July 2013. Serological analysis for total antiRVF antibodies for 370 ruminants was investigated using a multispecies competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kit. Host risk factors for RVFV seropositivity were examined by both univariable analysis and mixed effects logistic regression model. Unadjusted odds ratios (OR) for seropositivity were estimated using log linear regression model.
Results: The overall seroprevalence for the 370 ruminants was 27.6%. Sheep (n= 87) and cattle (n= 12) had higher prevalence 32.2% (CI [20.6 -31]) and 33.3% (CI [6.7 -60]) respectively than goats (n = 271), 25.8% (CI [22.4 – 42]). Seropostivity in males was 31.8% (CI [22.2-31.8]) higher than 27% (CI [18.1-45.6]) in females. There was an increased likelihood of higher seropositivity in old (OR 18.24, CI [5.26 -116.4]), p < 0.0001) than young animals.
Conclusions: This study demonstrates the widespread serological evidence and potential RVFV circulation among domestic ruminants in Garissa district thus indicative of an endemic reservoir of infection. There is need for increased preparedness and response in RVF endemic areas by conducting animal-human syndromic sero-surveillance as part of one health early warning system.

Most common causes of abortion and miscarriages include genetic abnormalities in embryo, congenital malformations, immune causes, hormonal causes and infections.
Infections are the least responsible but the most important being extrinsic cause of abortions and thus treatable.
Among the causes of reproductive tract infections commonest are bacteria followed by virus and parasites.
Bacterial infections affect prospective mother right from implantation of the zygote till the postpartum period. Important bacteria are Mycoplasma, Listeria, Salmonella, Brucella and E. coli etc. To treat the bacterial infections antibiotics are the final weapons but proving futile day by day with the emergence of multiple drug resistant (MDR) pathogenic bacteria.
A total of 516 bacterial strains (91 Gram positive and 425 Gram –ve) isolated from cases of abortion (buffaloes 63, cattle 408, goats 14, mares 5, sows 5 and bitches 2) and metritis (bitches 17, buffaloes 2) in animals were tested for sensitivity to:
15 herbal antimicrobials (essential oils of Zanthoxylum rhetsa, Thyme, lemon grass, sandal wood, ajowan, betel leaf, guggul, cinnamon, agar wood, holy basil, patchouli and methanolic extract of Zanthoxylum rhetsa, and three active compounds from herbs viz., carvacrol, cinnamledehyde and citral) and
33 antibiotics (amoxycillin, amoxycillin clavulanic acid, ampicillin, azithromycin, aztreonam cefepime, cefotaxime, cefotaxime clavulanic acid, cefoxitin, ceftazidime, ceftazidime clavulanic acid, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, colistin, cotrimoxazole, erythromycin, gentamicin, imipenem, meropenem, moxalactam, nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, novobiocin, penicillin, piperacillin, v tazobactam, polymyxin B sulphate , streptomycin, tigecycline and vancomycin) using disc diffusion assay.
To determine extended spectrum β-lactamase and mettalo β-lactamase production specific E-test and polymerase chain reaction assays were performed.
Bacteria belonging to 37 genera were identified from aborted foetal tissues or membranes (497) and bacteria of 6 genera from cases of metritis (19). The 10 most common genera of bacteria associated with abortion were Escherichia (117), Aeromonas (50), Enterobacter (46), Streptococcus (36), Brucella (32), Klebsiella (26), Staphylococcus (22), Alcaligenes (20), Moraxella (19) and Acinetobacter (17).
The bacteria associated with metritis were Staphylococcus (10), Bacillus spp., (2), Enterobacter spp. (1), Escherichia coli (4), Streptococcus milleri (1) and Vibrio alginolyticus (1).
Conclusion: Some of the herbal antimicrobial is as good as antibiotics or even better, the question is how we can use these to alleviate the infections of reproductive tract. In vitro studies are just indicative and real picture may be lucid after in vivo studies for which a concerted one health study is the need of the day.

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a devastating disease in many of the developing countries including India despite control programs. The FMD in India is associated with loss of about Rs. 20000 crores per annually. Government of India and different provincial governments are spending hundreds of crore rupees per year to control the disease. The FMD control programme (FMD-CP) is running in India since more than 13 years but control of the FMD is still far away dream and the Disease is regularly visiting even the government farms managed by the India's leading Veterinary and Dairy Institutes. The pros and cons of FMD-CP has been discussed in the presentation.

The purpose of the study was to know the conduct of pig farms, the state of cysticercosis and its consequences on the quality of production of pigs in N'Djamena, Chad. Three methods were used: (i) the transverse and retrospective survey for information related to the conduct and hygiene in 64 farms sampled in eight blocks belonging to three districts, (ii) the langueyage to observe cysts and (iii ) documentary investigation for total seizures in the slaughter house over six years. All farms had barns which were considered in good condition (66%). However, most of the farms (91%) did not practice permanent confinement. The majority (81%) accounted for two per day of food distributions to pigs against three for the minority (19%). According to 64% of the farmers, 50% of citizens of their respective square have latrines. Of 861 pigs identified, 20% were examined and 9.7% were carriers of cysts. Carcasses at slaughter percentage seizures ranged from 2.5% to 5% depending on the year; an average of about 4% over six years. The prevalence of infestations remained generally lower than those observed in some cities of northern Cameroon. Losses were estimated to average 5,31,900 FCFA / year. Knowledge and practice of screening techniques for this disease by producers would minimize economic losses, improvement of production quality and avoiding human contamination. Further investigation seems necessary to highlight the animal health status and quality of pork production in this area.

Knowledge and practice of screening techniques for this disease by producers would minimize economic losses, improvement of production quality and avoiding human contamination. Further investigation seems necessary to highlight the animal health status and quality of pork production in this area.

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in domestic animals in District Ban...Open Access Research Paper
Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular zoonotic protozoan parasite, infect both humans and animals population worldwide. It can also cause abortion and inborn disease in humans and livestock population. In the present study total of 313 domestic animals were screened for Toxoplasma gondii infection. Of which 45 cows, 55 buffalos, 68 goats, 60 sheep and 85 shaver chicken were tested. Among these 40 (88.88%) cows were negative and 05 (11.12%) were positive. Similarly 55 (92.72%) buffalos were negative and 04 (07.28%) were positive. In goats 68 (98.52%) were negative and 01 (01.48%) was recorded positive. In sheep and shaver chicken the infection were not recorded.

Brucellosis: Epidemiology and Control in indiaBhoj Raj Singh
Brucellosis is an important endemic infectious disease in animals in India. In India brucellosis was first recognized in 1942 by Polding. It causes economic loss to the tune of nearly Rs. 350 million/year. Bovine brucellosis is caused by the bacterium Brucella abortus. In countries where cattles are kept in close association with sheep and goat it can also be caused by B. melitensis. Occasionally B. suis may also cause disease in mammary gland of cattle but it has not been reported to cause abortion and usually does not spread to other animals. Principal manifestations of animal brucellosis are reproductive failure, i.e., abortion, still births and birth of unthrifty offspring in females, and orchitis and epididymitis in males. Genus Brucella has six recognized species on the basis of host specificity viz. B. abortus, B. melitensis, B. ovis, B. suis, B. canis and B. neotome, infecting cattle, goats and sheep, sheep, pig, dog and rats, respectively. All Brucella species may also infect wildlife species. Classical Brucella species have been isolated from a great variety of wildlife species such as bison, elk, feral swine, wild boar, fox, hare, African buffalo, reindeer, and caribou. Infection in wildlife can hinder eradication efforts in cattle.
The classical species viz., B. abortus, B. melitensis, and B. suis have been identified as category B bioterrorism agents (Rotz et al. 2002, CDC 2005) because they are zoonotic and capable of causing considerable morbidity with low mortality if used in a mass event.
Hepatic and Rumenal Worms Infestations of Cattle in Vina Division (Adamawa – ...AI Publications
The main objective of this work is to describe a preliminary epidemiological account of major hepatic and rumenal distome worms of cattle in Vina Division, Adamawa Region of Cameroon. A total of 1361 cattle dung specimens and 450 blood samples were collected between April 2018 and March 2019 in 06 subdivisions within Vina Division. The dung and blood samples were placed in a cooler. The cooler was immediately transported to the medical and veterinary laboratory of Special Mission of tsetse fly Eradication where samples were kept cold at +4°C for at most 48 hours. The qualitative method of concentration of worm eggs by simple sedimentation was performed.Blood parameters were measured using a haematology automated system. Of the 1361 cattle dung specimens examined, 424 presented distome eggs giving a prevalence of 31.15 %.These were Fasciola gigantica, Paramphistomum daubneyi and Dicrocoelium hopes eggs.All cattle age groups were infected by worms. In terms of prevalence, medium cattle were found to be the most infected. In lean cattle the parasitic loads of F. gigantic and D. hopes were high and then decreased as the health of the animals improved. All cattle breeds were infected by at least one of the worm species. Bokolo and Djafoun were most infected by F. gigantica, while Holstein and Aku were more influence by P. daubneyi. Goudali breed is the one that has undergone the least parasitic pressure. Male cattle were more infected than females, but females exhibited higher mean intensity of infestation. Older cattle were more susceptible to F. gigantic and D. hopes infection while Adults were more infected by P. daubneyi. Whatever the parasite considered, parasitic load progressively increased with the age of the cattle. The number of cattle infected by P. daubneyi and D. hopeswas greater in the rainy season unlike F. gigantic infection which was more recurrent in the dry season. Mbe locality had a high prevalence of F. gigantica and P. daubneyi. However, Ngaoundere 1, 2 and 3 presented the highest mean intensities for all worm species. Prevalence and mean intensities of cattle have been more important in extensive livestock status. All the worms were encountered all year round, except for November and December 2018 where D. hopes was absent. Polyparasitic cases were observed. Nevertheless, bispecifics associations were most frequent. Mean Corpuscular Volume, Platelet Concentrations, Mean Corpuscular Haemoglobin, Total Leucocytes Count and Granulocytes mean values were higher in cattle with significant parasitic loads while Total Erythrocyte Count and Packed Cell Volume were low. Today, it is well established that distomatoses represent one of the major parasitoses of cattle in Vina Division of Cameroon.
The Socio-Economics and Burden Impact of Rift Valley Fever in Garissa, KenyaNanyingi Mark
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a viral, vector borne zoonosis that has significant threat to livestock health and production and public health in Africa. Recent outbreaks have led to high livestock mortalities and human morbidity and socio economic impacts in Garissa. To assess the level of knowledge of pastoralists to causation and transmission risk factors and describe their attitude and practices in response to RVF outbreaks and management in the context of climate change shocks. To estimate the livelihood losses and burden impacts in Garissa. A population based cross sectional household survey was conducted in March 2012 and March 2013 in four hotspots. A multistage purposive sampling was used to identify 250 participants who included pastoralists, veterinary and medical personnel and livestock traders. KAP evaluation was by questionnaires in depth key informant interviews and focus group discussions. Participatory rural appraisal tools were used to assess the economic significance of the RVF outbreaks, risk factors and management costs. 185 respondents (74%) had good knowledge of RVF (symptoms scored >50%) and risk factor analysis indicated > 150 (60%) understood the consumption of meat of dead or infected animal, milk, touching aborted foetuses caused disease. Estimated lost revenue due to closure of livestock markets and bans was over Ksh.3 billion. Intervention costs and burden of the outbreaks is discussed. There is good knowledge and attitude on RVF risk, transmission and control. It re-emergence is associated with negative impacts on livelihoods and economic endpoints in Garissa.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 836 cattle {Bos (B.) indicus and B. taurus x B. indicus}
and 700 buffaloes (B. bubalis bubulus) (n=1536) of district Khanewal, Punjab, Pakistan, in order to determine
the epizootiology of anaplasmosis through conventional optical microscopy of Giemsa’s stained blood films.
With an overall prevalence of 4.17% (64/1536); the distribution of anaplasmosis was higher in buffaloes than
cattle, calves than adults, females than males. Anaplasmosis in selected animal population was found
statistically associated with the breed, season, animal keeping, housing system and hygienic management.
The collected information provides the first report of anaplasmosis in the study population of the region.
The data will not only be helpful for the dairy farmers to modulate farming practices but also for the policy and
decision makers to control the nuisance in the livestock population of the district. However, use of modern
molecular tools is suggested for differential diagnosis of Anaplasma from other haemoprotozoa like Babesia
and Theileria on a wider geographical spectrum.

2. Introduction
• Sheep and Goat husbandry is an important component of
mixed subsistence agriculture systems
• The Sheep and goat production system in the country is
mostly traditional type and the loss in the production
system is high to affect productivity.
• Resource poor farmers in the hills, who cannot invest
large sums of money in cattle and buffalo, prefer goat and
sheep keeping.
3. Statement of problem
• Production system in the country is mostly traditional type and the loss in the
production system is high (Joshi 1994).
• Gastrointestinal parasitic infestation is one of the important cause of poor
reproductive and productive performance (Dhar et al 1982; Karki 1987; Sheathe
1994; Tariq et al 2006).
• Similarly, Joshi 1994; Joshi 1998; Thakuri and Mahato 1990 stated that parasitic
gastroenteritis is one of the major cause of productivity loss in Goat and Sheep of
Nepal.
• Small ruminants – Sheep and Goat are very much prone to the infection of
gastrointestinal helminthes parasites.
• The gastrointestinal-parasites cause more than 20 percent loss in the
production and productivity of animal (Tripathi and Subedi 2015).
4. A total of 100 fecal samples were collected directly from rectum at
the pasture site of Ghanpokhara, Lamjung at an altitude of 2200
masl. The samples were then examined both qualitatively and
quantitatively by the sedimentation and floatation methods as per
standard (Soulsby 1982; MAFF 1986).
5. Results:
Out of 100 fecal samples tested, 80% samples were
positive for parasites.
Strongyle (78/100) was predominant folllowed by
Trichostrongyle (44/100), Moniezia (12/100), Trichuris
(8/100) and Coccidia ( 3/100).
There was mixed parasitic infection with mean EPG of
1227.53±167.43.

Whatever may be the case in other animals, significance of EPG counts vary by season : Spring 500-1000
EPG is serious infection , while in Fall > 2000 EPG is a serious infection. (Source:

10. Discussion
Higher infection with parasites (80%) in this study population
could be explained by the environment shared commonly both by
large animals, sheep and goats -------re-infection of contaminated
pastures.
• The lower EPG count in the sampled population during the March
might be due to condition of hypobiosis in which roundworms is
present in host with reduced fecundity as cited by Fritsche et al
1993.
11. • High Prevalence ------- low altitude and suitability for survival,
development and dissemination of nematode larvae.
• Higher incidence of parasitic infection in adult (92%) corroborates to the
findings of Annene et al 1994, Zvinorova et al 2016 and Singh et al 2015
while in contrast with the Talukdar (1996) and Pundlikrao (2009) as cited
by Singh et al 2015.
• High prevalence and relatively low intensity of infection seems to have
close agreement with the climatic conditions of study area and poor winter
nutrition and phenomenon of periparturient rise thus increasing
susceptibility to infection including worms.
12. • There was variation in prevalence between Sheep and Goat but that was non-
significant.
• Female animals had higher worm burden than male (P: 85.13% and EPG: 1000 ±
332.438 and P: 65.38% and EPG: 1272.31 ± 187.50 respectively).
• This could be due to differential susceptibility owing to hormonal control (Tariq et al
2008;Badaso and Addis 2015).
• The absence of Hemonchus in this study could be due to absence of hot humid
tropical environment (70-80º F) which is utmost need for the survival and
development of Hemonchus larvae (Joshi 1998; Yadav 2000) and this
environment is more favorable for the transmission of Strongyle and
Trichostrongylus sps (Joshi 1998).
• Note: The differentiation between Hemonchus and Strongyle sps was done only
based on morphological characteristics. Differentiation based on larvae
culture could not be done due to technical problem.
13. • Fecal egg count is the crude estimate of the worm burden (
Lloyd 1987).
• As cited by Lloyd 1987 and Joshi 1994, fecal egg count of >
2000 EPG ---- indicative of clinical disease and 500-2000
EPG indicative of subclinical parasitism.
• In this population, migratory sheep and goat are suffering from
sub-clinical helminth infection.
• The subclinical parasitism in this study is in agreement with
Joshi 1996 who reported the subclinical parasitism in
migratory flock and clinical parasitism common under the
intensive management system.
14. Strongyle EPG counts Actions: Remarks
˂200 Drench probably not required
200-500 Productivity losses and scouring may be
occurring. Drenching or repeating worm test is
required.
But in case of Hemonchus, an EPG count of
500 necessitates immediate de-worming
500-1000** Drench required This is high range

15. Conclusion
• Though there is subclinical parasitism, it is necessary to
perform regular de-worming as there is presence of
pathogenic worms such as Trichostrongyle and strongyle at
high range.
