3. The first Filipinos had an education system even before the
Spaniards came to our country. Education is informal because
it takes place at home.In large barangays, there are schools
called Bothoan. Here, the young people are taught to write,
count and use weapons. At home, the mother teaches her
daughters the tasks a woman should perform such as cooking,
planting, embroidery, sewing, and other household chores.

4. The boys are taught by their father the knowledge of farming,
fishing, hunting, sailing and warfare so that when he grows up
he can fulfill his responsibilities in their tribe.

5. READING AND WRITING
The first Filipinos had a way of writing and reading. Their
alphabet was called baybayin. It consists of 17 letters, 3 vowels
and 14 consonants. Their writing system is similar to the
writing system of Southeast Asians. It starts from the top
down. They used sharp objects such as knives, daggers and
sticks as pens.

6. They write with leaves and bark of
wood or bamboo. The ink they use is
colored with the sap of trees.
