Examining the Effects of Montessori 
Education on Development 
 Building upon the holistic educational principles established by Dr. Maria 
Montessori over 100 years ago, Le Petit Papillon Montessori School strives to 
cultivate an innate curiosity and love of learning in children at a young age. To 
date, numerous researchers have noted positive developmental differences in 
children exposed to the learning environment offered at Montessori schools, like 
Le Petit Papillon, compared to conventional schooling.
Examining the Effects of Montessori 
Education on Development 
 A long-term study published in 2006 in the journal Science tracked the 
development of groups of 5- and 12-year-old Milwaukee children. The results 
showed that the Montessori group of 5-year-olds outperformed on reading and 
math tests, despite not being regularly tested in their curricula. The group also 
demonstrated higher “executive functioning,” which is crucial for adapting to 
complex problems. The 12-year-old Montessori group wrote essays that were 
“significantly more creative,” notes co-researcher Angeline Lillard of the University 
of Virginia, and utilized more complex sentence structures. Additionally, results 
showed that students with a Montessori education were more likely to engage in 
positive behaviors in social settings, displaying more concern for fairness and 
justice.

Examining the Effects of Montessori Education on Development  Building upon the holistic educational principles established by Dr. Maria Montessori over 100 years ago, Le Petit Papillon Montessori School strives to cultivate an innate curiosity and love of learning in children at a young age. To date, numerous researchers have noted positive developmental differences in children exposed to the learning environment offered at Montessori schools, like Le Petit Papillon, compared to conventional schooling.

Examining the Effects of Montessori Education on Development  A long-term study published in 2006 in the journal Science tracked the development of groups of 5- and 12-year-old Milwaukee children. The results showed that the Montessori group of 5-year-olds outperformed on reading and math tests, despite not being regularly tested in their curricula. The group also demonstrated higher “executive functioning,” which is crucial for adapting to complex problems. The 12-year-old Montessori group wrote essays that were “significantly more creative,” notes co-researcher Angeline Lillard of the University of Virginia, and utilized more complex sentence structures. Additionally, results showed that students with a Montessori education were more likely to engage in positive behaviors in social settings, displaying more concern for fairness and justice.
