2. •An airport is a facility where
passengers connect from ground
transportation to air transportation.
•An airport is a location where aircraft
such as airplanes, helicopters take off and
land.
•Aircraft may also be stored or
maintained at an airport.
•An airport should have runway for
takeoffs and landings, buildings such as
hangars and terminal buildings.
Airport History
•The world's first airport was built in 1928 at
Croydon near London (England). It was the main
airport for London till it was closed down in 1959,
after the World War II. It is now open as a visitor
centre for aviation.

• An international airport has direct service to many other airports.
• Handle scheduled commercial airlines both for passengers and cargo.
• Many international airports also serve as "HUBS", or places where non-direct flights may
land and passengers switch planes.
• Typically equipped with customs and immigration facilities to handle international flights
to and from other countries.
• Such airports are usually larger, and often feature longer runways and facilities to
accommodate the large aircraft. (FBO, MRO etc..)

• Changi Airport, is the primary civilian airport
in the republic of Singapore.
•. It is located approximately 17.2 km (10.7 mi)
northeast from the commercial centre
in Changi.
•It’s on a 13 square kilometers (5.0 sq mi).
•Opened in 1955 with a single runway and a
small passenger terminal.
•It’s Singapore's third main civilian airport after

•Singapore's Changi
Airport is the world's
17th busiest airport.
•Changi Airport serves
more than 100 airlines
flying to some 300
cities in about 80
countries and
territories worldwide.
•Built just 30 years ago,
Changi has come a long
way from just one
terminal in 1988 to
four terminals today.

Changi airport components :-
•Changi Airport has three
passenger terminals with
a total annual handling
capacity of 66 million
passengers.
•Terminal 1 opened in
1981, followed by
Terminal 2 in 1990 and
Terminal 3 in 2008.
•The Budget Terminal,
opened on 26 March 2006
and closed on 25
September 2012, will
make way for Terminal 4
which will be ready by
2017.
•Changi Airport Terminal 5
is set to be ready in mid-
2020s which will be able
to handle 50 million
passenger movements per
annum
27. EXPANSIONS
• With growth in global aviation transport, the airport was
facing congestion problems.
• annual passenger numbers rose dramatically from
300,000 in 1955 to 1.7 million in 1970 and to 4 million in
1975.
The government had two options:-
1. expand the existing airport at Paya
Lebar.
2. build a new airport at another
location.
•After extensive study, a decision was
made in 1972 to keep the airport at Paya
Lebar, as recommended by a British
aviation consultant. Plans were made for
the building of a second runway and an
extensive redevelopment and expansion
to the passenger terminal building.
• Terminal 1 have been renovated in 2012.
• Terminal 2 was renovated in 2006.
• Terminal 3 opened in 2008 and is
connected to the rest of the airport via
Sky train.
• The Budget Terminal serves low-cost
carriers in Asia.
•
29. •Named the “Jewel Changi Airport,” or “Jewel,” the
glass dome will include 1.4 million square feet of
retail, hotel, restaurant and entertainment space,
all connected by multi-level gardens and lush
walking trails known as the “Forest Valley.” The
centerpiece, “Rain Vortex” will be a 40-meter-tall
waterfall fed by recycled rainwater that cascades
from the dome’s oculus.
JEWEL CHANGI AIRPORT
a 40-meter-tall waterfall fed by recycled rainwater
30. Rainwater will be collected via the waterfall and reused in the building, and at night it
will be the backdrop for a light and sound show that diners can watch from
overlooking restaurant terraces.
31. •A 40-metre-tall waterfall – dubbed the Rain Vortex –
will pour down from a round opening in the roof of
the glass dome. It will be joined by an "indoor
landscape" of trees and shrubs called Forest Valley,
which includes walking trails for visitors.
•The shape of the building is expected to serve a
dual purpose – creating a natural focus point for
the waterfall as well as providing structural
strength to allow a more "delicate" latticework
effect of glass panels framed in steel.
• Jewel evokes Singapore’s unique identity as a “City in a Garden,” recalling the tradition of metropolitan
centers with great parks. The route to Jewel on the main transportation roadway to Changi Airport is lined with
large canopy trees and lush greenery, connecting the green exterior experience with that of the gardens on the
interior.
•The roof garden, known as the Canopy Park, has a series of garden-oriented attractions designed in
conjunction with PWP Landscape Architecture (Berkeley, California), the landscape consultant for the project.
The suspended roof arches over the covered atrium, which is connected at multiple levels to the surrounding
retail floors.
32.
33. •Support for the dome will be provided by
tree-like structural columns that ring the
inside edge of the “Canopy Park” roof
garden, designed in conjunction with PWP
Landscape Architecture, and gathering space
at the dome’s upper level.
•Construction is expected to begin by the
end of 2014, and Jewel is scheduled for
completion at the end of 2018.

•The curved geometry of the building creates a natural location
for the Rain Vortex and easily accommodates connections from
the garden center to the surrounding terminal buildings. This
shape also provides inherent structural strength to the glass and
steel dome facade (allowing the framework to be delicate in the tradition of
glass conservatories, while also enhancing the immersive experience of the
gardens within). The arching glass roof is supported by a series of
tree-like structural columns that ring the inside edge of the roof
garden and the gathering space at the top level of the
development.
