Stop motion animation involves photographing stationary objects in small increments of movement to create the illusion of fluid motion between frames. It is a technique where objects are physically manipulated between individually photographed frames to simulate movement. Some common examples mentioned are Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Timmy Time and Pingu.

2. STOP MOTION ANIMATION is
and can be also known as stop

animation. This technique is
created when moving an object
and making it seem like it is
moving on its own.
Stop motion animation usually
uses still photographs or
pictures that are taken at regular
intervals and put together to
make a continuous film.

3. FRAME RATE (FRAME FREQUENCY)
Frame rate (or frame frequency) is the rate or speed at which an camera
makes consecutive images or photos called ‘frames’.
Frame rates are used when when synchronizing audio and pictures.
24, 25 and 30 frames per second are common, these each have different uses
in different areas in the industry. 24 frames per second is the professional
frame rate for motion pictures and for television it is 30 (USA).

4. Wallace and Gromit is a duo made
and created by Aardman
animation.
They were first shown on TV in
1989 and Aardman proceeded to
create three more short films about
the pair. Aardman have also
created a feature length film
starring the famous pair entitled
‘Wallace and Gromit and the curse
of the Were-Rabbit.
Aardman have also created two
spin-off shows to the origional
Wallace and Gromit short films.
(‘Shaun the sheep’ and ‘Timmy
Time’).

5. PINGU
‘Pingu’ is a series of stop-motion animation episodes which are aimed at
children. Pingu is classed as a children’s stop animation comedy. The
original show which ran from 1986 until 2000.
The program was created by Otmar Mazzola and the show originated in
Switzerland. The show is set in Antarctica and is based around a group of
penguins who live and work in igloos. Pingu is the main character and often
goes on adventures with his little sister Pinga and best friend Robby the Seal.
The program has no form of actually speaking, just sounds which sound like a
‘penguin’ language. This is mainly formed of loud ‘honking’ sounds and
occasionally some Swedish words can be heard.

6. TIM BURTON
has created films such as James and the Giant Peach, Corpse Bride and The
Nightmare before Christmas. Most people would say that Tim Burtons stop motion
animation characters look similar and it is seen as his trademark.

7. Aardman was founded in 1972 by David Spoxton and Peter Lord. The pair
made animated sequences for deaf children on a program which was on the
BBC called ‘Vision On’. They have created many stop-motion animation
short films and series’ of different shows. They are mostly known for using
plasticine for their models and sets. Aardman have also created a lot of
commericals including the duracell bunny le parkour (free running) advert.
Aardman are probably mostly known for Wallace and Gromit and the spin
off shows ‘Shaun the Sheep’ and ‘Timmy Time’. The Aardman team also
created the popular ‘Creatuere Comfort’ series.

8. THE HISTORY OF STOP MOTION ANIMATION
Stop motion animation has been around for almost as long traditional film
making. Originally stop motion used animating objects like toys or rigid
inanimate object. Animators started to use plasticine (clay animation)
and puppet animation.
In 1912 a clay animation stop motion animation film was released and got
great critical acclaim.

9. William Horner
born in 1786 in Bristol. He went
to Kingswood School, near
Bristol. He set up his own school
in 1809 named ‘The Classical
Seminary’ which was in Bath.
Him and his wife has six sons
and two daughters.
The modern ‘Zoetrope’ was
attributed to him.

10. Ray Harryhausen
Ray was known for his
dimensional stop motion
animation. He developed stories
and creatures based on legends
and mythology, this was a
unique genre of fantasy films
during the 1950s/60s/70s.
In 1938/39 Ray had
experimented with mattes for his
production of ‘Evolution of the
World’. He realised that if an
area was matted out he was
able to make what is known as
split screen.

11. Eadweard Muybridge
was a English
photographer, born in April
1830. Muybridge
