Pakistan Steel Mills is a large industrial complex located near Karachi that produces steel. It was established to reduce Pakistan's dependence on steel imports. However, it has struggled financially, accruing large losses and debts. Recent improvements include increasing production capacity to 45% and expectations of profitability by 2015 under new leadership. However, issues like corruption, lack of funds, mismanagement and overemployment continue to hamper the company. The government is suggested to address recurring staff, proper funding, promotion, removing illiteracy and corruption.

“Even
the best can be bettered.” It perfectly applies
to Continuous casting. Industry leaders always work on this concept of “there is a better way” and don’t settle for less. One of the
thought processes is how to get more from the investments on continuous casters
by optimization of the operations. This thought process is vital in the current tough
market conditions. Evolution of manufacturing processes through perfect application
of technology provides the
right platform to optimized manufacturing operations.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

9. Background and history of Pakistan steel mill
After independence in 1947, it did not take long for
Pakistan to come to the realization that progressive
industrial and economical development would be
impossible without the possession of a self reliant iron
and steel making plant. The dependence on imports
would cause serious setbacks to the country along with
an extortionately high import bill which would be
impossible to support. The initial idea for a domestic
iron and steel mill was put forward in the first five year
plan of Pakistan (1955 - 1960). Debates over the
manufacturing process, supply sources of the requisite
machinery and raw materials, plant site, domestic ore
versus imported ore, ownership pattern, product mix
and above all foreign financing credit kept the project
on hold for a considerable time
The completion of the steel mill was
formally launched by General Zia-Ul-
Haq the then President of Pakistan on
the 15th of January 1985. Today
Pakistan Steel is the country's largest
industrial undertaking having a
production capacity of 1.1 million tones
of steel.
Pakistan has the 40th-
highest iron ore production
(193 thousand tones) in the
world. The top 10 countries
by iron ore production are:
World, Australia, Brazil,
China, India, Russia, South
Africa, Ukraine, United States,
Pakistan Steel Mills are one of the
enormous and gigantically expanded
industrial complex in the country that
is located at a distance of 40 km
Southeast of Karachi at Bin Qasim
near Port Muhammad Bin Qasim.

15. Pakistan still
mill vs the
economy
The government never realized how much money a project
as enormous as the Pakistan Steel Mills Corporation could
bleed from the country if left in inept hands. The
government established the Pakistan steel mills corporation
thinking that that economic growth would not be possible
without a self sufficient iron and steel making plant. In May
2006 Pakistan Steel Mills was privatized. This could have
been one of smartest things that the government of General
Musharraf could have done
16. privatization

open auction sale and $362 million was paid .
the money that was being received from
selling of PSM was decided to use for

PPP(Pakistan People Party ).
17. Nationalization
Pakistan Steels Mills awaits appointment of financial adviser despite incurring
heavy losses
Pakistan Steel Mills Corporation (PSMC) has lost and cost the government a
huge amount of money so far.
Its annual losses stood at Rs9.33 billion and it needed to pay back Rs19 billion
worth of loans up till 1999.
it suffered a net loss of Rs19.5 billion in 2008-09. In just six months
it lost Rs5.622 billion during the July 2009 to January 2010 period.
18.
19. Current
Situation:
The good news has now starting going off from
Pakistan Steel Mills according to latest reports,
the production capacity of PSM has touched 45
% out of total capacity at present. This drastic
improvement has been seen ever since Govt
appointed Major General (Retd) Zaheer Ahmed
Khan as CEO, who is in charge of PSM since
7, 2014. The notable thing is that national steel
mill was working at 1.4 % of its total production
capability – at the time Major Gen Zaheer took
over. Moreover, the authorities are also claiming that
this vital national asset will soon become
profitable again in April, 2015 eyeing the
enhancement in its production capacity. This
proves that if right people having the will to
evolve any sector deployed on right positions,
no one can stop Pakistan to progress towards
due place on World’s map.
