Martin Weru of TIST Kenya presented on communicating carbon sequestration to farmers. [1] TIST works with over 60,000 smallholder farmers across several countries to plant trees and improve land management. [2] In Kenya, TIST engages over 52,000 registered farmers, many with low incomes, and has over 6,000 hectares under improved management. [3] TIST uses seminars, newsletters, meetings, and farmer representatives to build farmers' understanding of their role in climate change and recruit them to action through planting trees.

TIST Context • Small Groups of 6 -12 farmers, 60,000+ members doing tree planting carbon sequestration and sustainable development, 10 million+ live audited trees in India, East Africa, Central America • In Kenya: – 52,244 registered members (40% women). – 38% have income < 1,000 Ksh/month. 87% have income <5,000 Ksh/month. – 6,000+ HA under improved management (trees, conservation agriculture)
- 3. Describing Carbon Sequestration • Key: building farmers’ understanding of their role in climate change (cause and solution) and recruitment to action. Questions and discussion with about changes they have seen on their own farms and their vision of the future. • Communication channels: – Regular seminars for farmer representatives – Monthly Newsletter - in 4 local languages and English – Monthly Cluster meetings – On site trainings by specialist farmers (Quantifiers) • Challenges – Farmers would like higher carbon income: we emphasize that carbon IS a market, similarities to other, more familiar crop markets – Farmers would like higher carbon income: we ask questions to identify the other value and benefits farmers get from tree planting.
- 4. Financial and Non-Financial Benefits & Costs • Farmer-to-farmer communication on costs and benefits of tree planting/agroforestry. Farmers share specific stories of how planting trees in TIST has impacted them. • Addressing market uncertainty: – Two-part incentive (annual prepayment, profit sharing) – Explain profit = sales – costs, and farmers’ role in keeping costs low (‘TIST is low-budget, big results’); emphasize carbon only part of benefit. • Seminars and small group discussion useful for elucidating costs and benefits of tree planting; farmers have a lot of knowledge. • Challenges: To explain why: – incentive isn’t larger (farmers have heard huge carbon market value) – we can’t predict exactly when program will have profits to share or what those profits will be. • To address challenges: emphasize that carbon IS a market, similarities to other, more familiar crop markets, non-carbon tree benefits. Ask more questions, and let farmers find their own answers. Clarify when needed.
- 5. Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) • For all farmers: stress importance of accurate, honest data, TIST values. Carbon standards: analogy of buying bad seed at market. • Monitoring done by farmers themselves: specially trained Quantifiers, work with farmers directly. Quantifiers work with external verifiers to increase understanding. • Quantifier work with farmers, website, newsletter communicate MRV value • Challenges: to explain why some trees don’t qualify (pre- TIST planting, recently deforested land, etc) • To overcome challenge, frequent in-depth training of Quantifiers, part of core training in application to TIST, plus ongoing education in newsletter.
- 6. Legal Issues • Farmers sign contracts in Small Groups to share carbon revenue & to commit to plant and maintain trees. Training on this contract, carbon market requirements, & rights of farmers, CAAC part of core TIST training. • Groups decide how to share carbon incentive within group. Members are volunteers, and Groups can withdraw at will. Tools: contracts, training at meetings and seminars. • Each farmer learns about carbon markets, has contract with members of group she knows and trusts. • Land tenure can be an issue, and ensuring that people who do the work get the benefits from carbon sales.
