⢠GCR is named the Greater Capital Region.
⢠This is the proposal of the government for
making then regional plan for the Raipur
urban agglomeration and the durg bhilai
urban agglomeration .
⢠As you drive along the 40km-long west-east
stretch of NH-53, the boundaries blur and
you wonder where Chhattisgarhâs twin cities
of Durg-Bhilai end and where its capital
Raipur begins.
⢠It is for decentralising the 40km long
agglomeration between the Raipur and durg
bhilai .

include Birgaon and Mana
Camp in Raipur district
and Risali, Kumhari and
Bhilai Charoda in Durg
district in the GCR.

by municipal corporations,

region has a collective

The GCR, according to experts, is a practical proposition as the cities and towns being considered for it fall in a 65km linear
stretch.

HISTORY :
⢠Raipur district was the part of southern kosal and
considered to be under Maurya kingdom.
⢠Raipur has been in existence since 9th century.
CHANGING OF THE SITE
⢠During the region of Bhuvneshwardeva , the old
settlement of Raipur was shifted to the present site
when he got a new fort built at a better defensive
site, close to the Boorha.
RAIPUR URBAN GROWTH
Raipur has growth through many periods, they are as

The capital of Chhattisgarh was shifted from Ratanpur
and it remained under the British influence from 1818 to

24. About Durg district
Durg is a major city in the state of Chhattisgarh, India is in the middle of the Seonath river (Shivnath
river) in the east and Durg-Bhilai is a part of the urban pile. This fort is the headquarters of the district.

31. Transportation
Durg Railway Station connects the city to the rest of the country. It has five
other small railway station sector-7 (Bhilai Nagar), bhilai Power house, Bhilai
3, Charoda and Kumhari.
Roads of Bhilai Township are very beautiful, well maintained and broad. The
city has 4 flyovers and underbridges, which allows free movement of traffic
anytime in the city. Within the town, the people depend mostly on own vehicles
and hired auto rickshaws, which can only be hired only from a nearby auto
stand. Tempos are diesel run three-wheelers that ply on the National Highway
no 6 and a central road called the Central Avenue, which runs parallel to the
highway.

1.The modern history of Durg-
Bhilai is closely tied to industrial
development, particularly with
the establishment of the Bhilai
Steel Plant in the mid-20th

2.The Bhilai Steel Plant, set up

Union, played a pivotal role in
transforming the region into an

Post-Independence Era:
1.After India gained independence in 1947,

Literacy Rate â Durg District
The total literacy rate of Durg was 86.79% in 2011 which is greater than the average literacy rate of
70.28% of Chhattisgarh. Population-wise, out of total 477,664 literates, males were 261,563 while
females were 216,101. Also the male literacy rate was 92.33% and the female literacy rate was
80.92% in Bhilai Nagar (Part).
Working Population
In Bhilai Nagar (Part) Municipal Corporation +
Outgrowth out of total population, 202,446 were
engaged in work activities. 95.4% of workers describe
their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning
more than 6 Months) while 4.6% were involved in
Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6
months. Of 202,446 workers engaged in Main Work,
663 were cultivators (owner or co-owner) while 1,089
were Agricultural laborers.

36. Economy
1. Bhilai is home to the Bhilai Steel Plant, the first and largest Indian plant to produce
steel rails. The inauguration of the first blast furnace of Bhilai Steel Plant was done
by then president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad, which was established with help from
the Soviet Union in 1955.
2. Iron ore from Rajhara, limestone from Nandini, coal from Jharia, manganese from
Balaghat, electric power from the Kosa thermal power plant, and water from the
Tandula Canal, all nearby, are used in the Bhilai Steel Plant to manufacture rails and
structural steel. [Pig iron and billets are supplied to foundries and rolling mills located
at Kumhari and other sites in central India.]
3. The number of steel rails produced by the facility till 2007 can go around the
circumference of the earth 7.5 times. [This is depicted on the monument at the globe square
in the heart of the city. The facility underwent modernisation and expansion and is amongst the
leading manufacturers of iron and steel in Asia.]
Education
1. The city serves as an educational hub in the region, with a total of 59 universities and colleges, like Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT) Bhilai, Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University, Bhilai Institute of Technology, Chandulal
Chandrakar Memorial Government Medical College, Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Medical Sciences, Rungta College
Bhilai, St. Thomas College, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions, Christian College of Engineering & Technology,
Kalyan College Sector 7 and CSIT Engineering College.
2. Schools in Bhilai are run either by municipal corporations or privately by entities, trusts, and corporations. The majority of
schools are affiliated with the Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education and the Central Board of Secondary
Education. D.P.S. Risali, BSP S.S.S. Sector 10, Shankra Mahavidyalaya Sector 10, K.P.S. Bhilai, D.A.V. Hudco, K.V.
Durg are few of the well known schools in the city.
3. Also, a lot of coaching institutes are present in the city for preparation of competitive exams like IIT, NEET, CA, GATE,
CAT, UPSC, CGPSC and many more, for which students from all over Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states come here
for preparation. Thus it is also known as "Education hub of Chhattisgarh".

37. Culture
The culture in Bhilai is cosmopolitan due to the large-scale migration of people from all over the
country. The major population is of localities of the state "Chhattisgarhi". Bhilai also boasts of high
levels of linguistic and religious unity, which has been the hallmark of its culture since its inception. The
local language is Chhattisgarhi, which is very similar to Hindi. All major festivals of Bhilai are
celebrated in a scale similar to their region of origin. Like the Durga Puja celebrations of Bhilai are in
tune with that in West Bengal.
