and Negative
Reinforcement
in Gamified Environment

MOTIVATION
RESEARCH QUESTIONS /
HYPOTHESIS
1.Does sound cue as reinforcement affect players’ performance?
2.If so, considering both positive and negative reinforcements, which one has more efficiency in
it?
3.Does visual feedback (skin, RGB effect... etc)affect players' performance?
4.Do visual feedback and sound cues appear to have a joint effect.
1. We wanna make a Rhythm Game!!!
2. We are curious about reinforcement (behaviorism theory) under gamified environment.
Especially considering musical game is capable to provide such a experimental environment.
(which means we can set experimental group and control group and controlling third factors
rigorously).
Our game is a rhythm game. In our game, player has to face 3 different kinds of
enemies: Samurai, Ninja, and General. These enemies has to be beat in specific
ways: to beat a Samurai, player needs to press left button; to beat a Ninja, player
needs to press right button; to beat General, player needs to hold up button for a
while. These enemies will come in a series that matches to the rhythm, and player
has to press the button in proper time.
GAME DESIGN
We have four different models in our game: positive/negative response
with/without visual effect. In positive response model, players will receive pleasant
sounds if they hit enemies successfully, while in negative response model they will
receive annoying sounds if they miss enemies. And both positive and negative
model have with-visual response version and no-visual response version. So we
have four different model in our games in together.

2. we do find some meaningful & significant result refers to our hypothesis...
CONCLUSION
To answer our hypothesis..
Yes, sound cue affect players’ ability to precisely hit the musical notes.
Additionally, The positive reinforcement is significant stronger than negative one.
Player who play the game with visual feedback performance significantly better
than non-visual feedback group.
There is no joint effect between visual feedback and sound cue in this game
setting.
Another interesting finding is that, our data indicates that player in positive group
learned to be accurate better than other groups. ( considering we let all
participants play for 3 rounds...)

MOTIVATION RESEARCH QUESTIONS / HYPOTHESIS 1.Does sound cue as reinforcement affect players’ performance? 2.If so, considering both positive and negative reinforcements, which one has more efficiency in it? 3.Does visual feedback (skin, RGB effect... etc)affect players' performance? 4.Do visual feedback and sound cues appear to have a joint effect. 1. We wanna make a Rhythm Game!!! 2. We are curious about reinforcement (behaviorism theory) under gamified environment. Especially considering musical game is capable to provide such a experimental environment. (which means we can set experimental group and control group and controlling third factors rigorously).
  • 3. Our game is a rhythm game. In our game, player has to face 3 different kinds of enemies: Samurai, Ninja, and General. These enemies has to be beat in specific ways: to beat a Samurai, player needs to press left button; to beat a Ninja, player needs to press right button; to beat General, player needs to hold up button for a while. These enemies will come in a series that matches to the rhythm, and player has to press the button in proper time. GAME DESIGN
  • 4. We have four different models in our game: positive/negative response with/without visual effect. In positive response model, players will receive pleasant sounds if they hit enemies successfully, while in negative response model they will receive annoying sounds if they miss enemies. And both positive and negative model have with-visual response version and no-visual response version. So we have four different model in our games in together. GAME DESIGN Positive Negative

  • 8. 1. We make a awesome, playable, and perhaps turnable musical game. 2. we do find some meaningful & significant result refers to our hypothesis... CONCLUSION To answer our hypothesis.. Yes, sound cue affect players’ ability to precisely hit the musical notes. Additionally, The positive reinforcement is significant stronger than negative one. Player who play the game with visual feedback performance significantly better than non-visual feedback group. There is no joint effect between visual feedback and sound cue in this game setting. Another interesting finding is that, our data indicates that player in positive group learned to be accurate better than other groups. ( considering we let all participants play for 3 rounds...)
