2. SOME DEFINITIONS
The ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.
(Oxford English Dictionary 2006)
The ability to learn, understand and to make judgment or have opinions
that based on reason.
(Cambridge Advance Learner Dictionary 2006)
The capacity for logic, understanding, self awareness, learning, emotional
knowledge, planning, creativity and problem solving.
The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination. ( Einstein)
I know that I am intelligent because I know that I know nothing.
( Socrates )
3. When psychologists first began to write and think about
intelligence, they focused on cognitive aspects such as memory
and problem solving for the simple reason that are easy to
measure. This became known as intelligence Quotient or IQ.
However there were researchers who recognized early on that the
non-cognitive aspects were also important.
As early as the 1994 psychologist were referring to non-
intellective as well as intellective elements of intelligence by
which they meant personal and social factors . Furthermore they
proposed that these non-intellective abilities are essential for
predicting someone ‘s abilities to succeed at work and in life.
4. These theories were supported by the Ohio State
Leaderships Studies1990s.
The psychologist Salovey and Goleman first used the term
Emotional intelligence
In 1990s. They defined it as:
“a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to
monitor one’s own feeling and emotions to discriminate
among them and to use this information to guide one’s
thinking and actions.”
5. The psychologists Salovey and Mayer originally coined the
term emotional intelligence in 1999. However, Daniel
Goleman popularized it in 1995 in the title of his bestselling
book , Emotional Intelligence: Why it can Matter more than
IQ. Goleman defined EI as:
“To understand one’s own feeling, empathy for the feeling
of others and the regulation of emotion in way that enhance
living”.
He made two claims:
EI is more important for personal success than IQ.
Unlike IQ emotional intelligence can be improved.
6. Know your emotions
Manage your emotions
Recognize and know others’ emotions
Manage the emotions of others
Motivate yourself
Emotional Intelligence is broadly divided
into:
PERSONAL COMPETENCE
SOCIAL COMPETENCE.
7. This area of competence is concerned with three of the five
Goleman’s domains. It is further divided into Self Awareness and
Self Management.
(1) Self Awareness:
To understand how you feel and can accurately assess your own
emotional state.
Self Assessment
To understand your own strengths and weaknesses and it is also
about being willing to explore them both ,either by thinking
about them yourself or discussing them with others.
Self Confidence
It is the ability to ground oneself so that you are secure and self
assured in whatever situation you may find yourself.
8. (2) Self Management:
The awareness that you get of yourself from self
awareness give you the power to control yourself. In
other words how you regulate or maintain your control
of mind while facing any problem or when you face
provocation.
9. This area of competence is concerned with Goleman’s
remaining domains: social awareness and social skills.
These skills look at how well you manage your
relationships with others, including their emotions.
(A) Social Awareness
It involves expanding your awareness to include the
emotions of those people around you. It includes being
able to empathize with others and being aware of how
the organization that you are working in affect them.
This covers yours ability to read the emotional
environment and relationship you encounter in life.
10. (B)Social Skills or Relationship Management
It means using your own emotions and those of other to
build strong relationships. It includes the identification,
analysis and management of relationships with people
inside and outside your team as well as their
development through feedback and coaching. It also
incorporates your ability to communicate, persuade and
lead others people.
