Goals:
To train engineers with specific competences either in fluid
mechanics and energetics, or in solid and structure mechanics,
for: Conception, modeling and computing research and
development consultancy.
Strong points :
Multidisciplinary training in keeping with the great variety of
job opportunities in the mechanical industry, with special
emphasis on modeling and the numerical simulation of
industrial problems.

with the Lyon Hospital Complex clearly focuses on medical
instrumentation i.e. medical scanning and hospital technical
platforms.

APPLICATIONS NUMERIQUES EN MATLAB
MATLAB-BASED NUMERICAL APPLICATION IN ENGINEERING:
Base competencies: Introduction to Matlab and ‘Numerical Methods I’
lectures.
Target competencies :
Students should be able to identify the type of problems that require
numerical techniques.
The computer assignments are based on the software package Matlab, to
solve problems with emphasis on application in Engineering . This is an
important component of the course ‘Numerical Methods I’.
Content include:
Root finding; interpolation and approximation; numerical integration;
ordinary differential equations and linear systems.

METHODES NUMERIQUES DE BASE
NUMERICAL METHODS I (Each chapter begins with real-world problem involving
the numerical method)
Prerequisite(s): Introductory calculus and linear algebra.
Learning Objectives :
Students should have a basic knowledge of modern numerical techniques they
could use to accurately approximate solutions of problems that cannot be solved
exactly. They should know how, why and when these techniques can be expected
to work and estimate bounds for the errors in the approximations.
Topics include:
Root finding of single nonlinear equation and system of nonlinear equations; Data
interpolation and approximation; numerical integration and numerical
differentiation;
Numerical techniques for ordinary differential equations (ODE) and system of
ODEs ; Direct and iterative methods for linear systems.

MULTIVARIABLE DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS
Prerequisite(s): Introductory calculus and basic linear algebra.
Learning Objectives:
Students should be able to use differential calculus of functions of several variables
with emphasis on application in Engineering e.g optimization problems.
Topics include:
Partial and directional derivatives; Differentials and Jacobian matrix ; Taylor Series and
Hessian ; Inverse functions; Implicit functions; extrema and unconstrained
optimization; Lagrange multipliers and equation-constrained optimization;
Systems of ODEs and dynamical systems: solution of systems of linear ODEs;
introduction to nonlinear sytems of ODEs: phase space, singular points, stability.

VECTOR CALCULUS
Prerequisite(s): Introductory calculus .
Learning Objectives:
Students should be able to use vector calculus differential calculus of functions of several
variables with emphasis on application in Engineering e.g optimization problems.
Topics include:
Vector algebra overview; Line, surface and volume integrals; Gradient, Divergence and
Curl; Integral Theorems; Curvilinear Coordinates; Cartesian
Each chapter gives a brief overview of some of the applications of the subject, including
the flow of heat within a body, the mechanics of solids and fluids and electromagnetism.
Applications: Heat transfer; Electromagnetism: Electrostatics, Electromagnetic waves in a
vacuum; Continuum mechanics and the stress tensor; Solid mechanics (equation of
motion for a fluid; the vorticity equation; Bernouilli’s equation)
International exchanges

  • 26. 23/06/2014 APPLICATIONS NUMERIQUES EN MATLAB MATLAB-BASED NUMERICAL APPLICATION IN ENGINEERING: Base competencies: Introduction to Matlab and ‘Numerical Methods I’ lectures. Target competencies : Students should be able to identify the type of problems that require numerical techniques. The computer assignments are based on the software package Matlab, to solve problems with emphasis on application in Engineering . This is an important component of the course ‘Numerical Methods I’. Content include: Root finding; interpolation and approximation; numerical integration; ordinary differential equations and linear systems.
  • 27. 23/06/2014 METHODES NUMERIQUES DE BASE NUMERICAL METHODS I (Each chapter begins with real-world problem involving the numerical method) Prerequisite(s): Introductory calculus and linear algebra. Learning Objectives : Students should have a basic knowledge of modern numerical techniques they could use to accurately approximate solutions of problems that cannot be solved exactly. They should know how, why and when these techniques can be expected to work and estimate bounds for the errors in the approximations. Topics include: Root finding of single nonlinear equation and system of nonlinear equations; Data interpolation and approximation; numerical integration and numerical differentiation; Numerical techniques for ordinary differential equations (ODE) and system of ODEs ; Direct and iterative methods for linear systems.

Learning Objectives: Students should be able to use differential calculus of functions of several variables with emphasis on application in Engineering e.g optimization problems. Topics include: Partial and directional derivatives; Differentials and Jacobian matrix ; Taylor Series and Hessian ; Inverse functions; Implicit functions; extrema and unconstrained optimization; Lagrange multipliers and equation-constrained optimization; Systems of ODEs and dynamical systems: solution of systems of linear ODEs; introduction to nonlinear sytems of ODEs: phase space, singular points, stability.

Learning Objectives: Students should be able to use vector calculus differential calculus of functions of several variables with emphasis on application in Engineering e.g optimization problems. Topics include: Vector algebra overview; Line, surface and volume integrals; Gradient, Divergence and Curl; Integral Theorems; Curvilinear Coordinates; Cartesian Each chapter gives a brief overview of some of the applications of the subject, including the flow of heat within a body, the mechanics of solids and fluids and electromagnetism. Applications: Heat transfer; Electromagnetism: Electrostatics, Electromagnetic waves in a vacuum; Continuum mechanics and the stress tensor; Solid mechanics (equation of motion for a fluid; the vorticity equation; Bernouilli’s equation)
