- 5. FIJI and SOLAR ENERGY – in the Past Solar Water Pump Installation of Solar Water Pumps to cater for village water supply needs. Supply of fresh water for drinking and cooking from the boreholes. Solar Street Light Utilizing renewable energy resources for electrification in the rural areas. Solar Electrification Barefoot College has trained almost 40 plus women from the rural areas and villages. Rural women, to tap into their potential to become solar engineers and electrify their various villages.
- 6. International Solar Alliance (ISA) Solar Home Systems Electrification Two Solar Home Systems Electrification projects worth close to $180,000 in Namara and Nukulau village in Ra Province. Total of 44 families in the two villages are now being provided safe and stable energy supply. FIJI and SOLAR ENERGY – in the Present International Solar Alliance (ISA), for promotion of solar energy. Focus is on solar power utilization. Fiji, one of the first 15 countries to ratify the agreement.

- Respected Secretary – Shri Anand Kumar, Director General – Shri Upendra Triptahy, Excellence's and Dignitaries, Bula Vinaka and Namaste to everyone. This afternoon I will be speaking to you about scaling of Solar applications in Fiji. To begin with, I would like to briefly show the effects of climate change in Fiji and PSIDS. Fiji is located in the in the South Pacific Ocean and has a wide range of resources such as Biomass, Geothermal, Ocean Energy Resources, Hydraulic Resources, Solar and Wind.
- Fiji is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and the unsustainable exploitation of the oceans, although much less than many other Small Island Developing States, including some of its low-lying neighbors in the South Pacific. With its 330 small islands, Fiji regularly has to face the severe consequences of climate change. Rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions represent a big challenge for the Pacific island states. As a Pacific Small Island Developing State, Fiji faces the negative effects of climate change, including unpredictable storms of extreme intensity, such as Tropical Cyclone Winston, which struck Fiji in February 2016; the rising sea-levels have caused the Fijian Government to identify some 80 villages for relocation to higher ground; and warming seas, which have caused changes in fish populations and bleaching of coral reefs. These are very extreme threats of climate change.
- Keeping in mind about the SDGs No. 7 and13 which are in place to increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix and to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy; Fiji had been in the process of implementation of Solar Energy and its applications since 1983 and now progressing to take the leadership roles in the world by taking the Presidency of COP23 and recently co-chaired, with the government of Sweden, the United Nations Oceans Summit—as a direct result of its endangered relationship to the sea.
- Solar technologies have been proven feasible and is being exploited in many forms in Fiji such as solar home systems, solar water pumps, solar water heaters to name a few. The exploitation of renewable based technologies reduces Fiji’s reliance on imported fuels whilst at the same time improves the livelihood of rural dwellers. The Department of Energy (DOE) has been assisting villages in the installation of Solar Water Pumps to cater for village water supply needs. The solar water pumps operate in the daytime during normal sunshine hours and automatically switch off at sunset. This allows the borehole to replenish its water level before pumping starts the next day. Another advantage of the pumps is that they are fitted with sensor and floating switches to regulate the volume of water and level of water inside the boreholes. In early 2008, the Department of Energy (DOE) through contracting was able to install six (6) solar streetlights on the jetty in Koro Island. This is currently operational and is being monitored by the DOE. Since 2012, the Fijian Government with the cooperation of the Government of India and Barefoot College has trained almost 40 plus women from the rural areas and villages in the field of solar electrification. These women when returned back to Fiji, solar-powered their villages in the communities that they lived in.
- Fiji has been supporting the initiative of launching ISA by the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in November 2015 and has now become one of the first 15 countries to ratify the Framework Agreement. As you can see, Fiji has just commissioned the two Solar Home Systems Electrification projects worth close to $180,000 in Namara and Nukulau village in Ra Province. More importantly it also means that rural villages will be using a cleaner and environmentally friendly source of electricity that will help slow down climate change and reduce its effects. A total of 44 families in the two villages are now being provided safe and stable energy supply.
- During my recent visit to Indore, Shakti Pumps have showcased the Solar-based pumping solutions which can provide reliable, predictable and affordable energy inputs for agricultural irrigation and can translate into increased crop yields. This solution can have a direct economic impact on farmers, with derived benefits ranging from increased and sustained income to reduced hardships to improved livelihoods and stable food security in Fiji. Fiji is looking forward to adapt and implement these kind of solar based technologies soon. The Barefoot College to be built in Fiji will be a partnership between the Government of India and Fiji, and will provide the solar equipment, technical expertise, training and vocational support in the field of solar electrification. The entire project, is basically an initiative to enhance the expertise and skills of rural women, to tap into their potential to become solar engineers and electrify their various villages. Fiji is also looking at ways to adopt Solar Mini Grids and currently liaising with ISA.
