The VP-Hobe Manure Recycling Procedure is a system that entirely decomposes and recycles pig slurry into concentrated ammonium, granular organic soil conditioner rich in phosphates and potassium, and clean water. It focuses on maximizing nutrient recovery by extracting 100% of the potassium, nitrogen, and phosphates using efficient separation techniques and converting the remaining energy and materials into useful end products like fertilizers, charcoal, and water that meets legal standards for discharge. The procedure is robust, reliable, cost-effective, and developed over 20 years of experience to achieve total recycling and nutrient recovery from manure.

Introduction
The focus in manure managementandvalorisationhas shifted from nutrientremovaltowards
maximal nutrientrecovery. The technology of VP-Hobemeets this objective. The VP-HobeManure
Rcycling Procedure is robust, reliable and cost-effective and extracts 100% ofthe nutrientsavailable in
the manurefor the productionof valuablefertilisers and clean water.
More than 20 years of experience in manure recycling
VP-Hobeis a SME located in the Netherlandsandpioneer in the developmentof manureprocessing
systems. Co-founderFransHoubrakenisthe drivingforce behindmany pivotal innovationsinmanure
processingand in ammoniahandling. The VP-HobeManureProcessingProcedure linksseveral
processesto recycle pig manure intogranular organic soil improver. The fundamentalidea is to
maximally retain the mineral load (nitrogen, potassiumandphosphates)ofthe manurein the end
products.
The knowhowof VP-Hobelays at the intersection of agricultural technology, chemistry and process
managementVP-Hobehasdeveloped its ManureRecycling Procedure by constanton-siteexperiments
with scaled modelsandvalidates its installationsthroughextensivetesting and sampling. VP-Hobehas
co-developedwith InnoplusandtheSwiss water-recycling firm Hartmannthe biological air washer for
agricultural use. VP-Hobecontributedby creating the ideal habitatfor the microorganismsinvolvedin
nitrification and denitrification. VP-Hobehasbuilt the pastthree yearsmore than 200 biological air
washers.
2. Since 2005 VP-Hobehasmade the first stepsin the developmentof a complete manureprocessing
system, namedthe VP-HobeManureRecycling Procedure. Severalinstallationsorparts of it are up and
runningfor more than ten years. VP-Hobehasseparated more than2 500 000m²pigmanure. VP-
Hobe developsandbuilds onvarioussites the mosteffective manureseparationsystemson the
market. The knowhowis officially acknowledgedandprotected by patents(NL-2010263).
What can VP-Hobe do for you?
1. The most efficient separation technique
To have valuablefertilizers at the outsideof the process anefficient and costeffective separationis
key. VP-Hobelinks two different techniques: flotation and belt filter system. Duringthe process no
iron - or aluminiumparticles need to be added. The minerals and phosphatesremainunboundinthe
process. A homogenousandthick massis producedwith a dry matter of 38% containingphosphates
thatare readily available for the soil.
2. Cost effective water treatment and nitrogen and potassium extraction
There are many prejudices towards the use of reversed osmosisinmanure handling. Thisis primarily
due to a poorexecution of the technology. VP-Hoberemovesall organic particles from the liquid
fraction without congestionof the installation and secretes all the potassiumandnitrogen. VP-Hobe
operates the installationsremotely and hasdevelopedthe ideal cleaning and maintenanceprograms.
As a result the reversed osmosisrunsstable, hasa longer operating life and a higher cost-
effectiveness. The VP-Hobewater treatmentsinstallations are up andrunningfor more than 8 years
incessantly. The VP-Hobewater purification systemproduceswater of better quality thanthe official
water supply system does.
3. Production of charcoal, concentrated ammonium and potassium fertiliser
Full recycling cycle: revaluationof waste (manure) to finished goodsandclean materials. Productionof
exportable andbiologically safe organic soil improverwith dry matter contentabove85% (charcoal:
high carbonsoil conditioner containingover12,5% ofphosphates), and a concentrated fertiliser with
N > 50 g/kg; high concentratedK fertilizer. Productionof Ammoniasolution(NH4 20% – 24%)for
industrialuse in cleaning or cooling. Ammoniacontributessignificantly to the nutritionalneeds of
terrestrial organisms.
3. The VP-Hobe Manure Recycling Procedure
The VP-HobeManureProcessing Procedureis robust, reliable andcost-effective. The procedure
chains several processesinto an integratedsystemthat entirely decomposesandrecycles pig slurry
into concentratedammonium, into exportablegranular organic soil conditioner-rich in phosphates
andpotassium- andinto clean water. Overall, the VP-HobeManureProcessingProceduresfocusses on
maximisingthe proceeds by extracting 100% ofpotassium, nitrogenand phosphateswithgoodwater
solvability (1) to convert the remainingenergy into heath (2), andto drain clean water thatmeets the
legal requirements for dischargeinto surface water (3).

Highlights of the VP-Hobe Manure Recycling Procedure
1. The mineralsare 100% retained in the end-products
During flotationno ironsulfuror aluminiumparticles are added. The mineralsremain
unbound, whichimprovesabsorptionby plantsandsoil.
Nouse of the chemical procedure, bindingthe ammonia –NH3- to sulphur, inorder to increase
utility of the ammoniaconcentrate for industrial or agricultural purposes
The charcoal delivered throughthegasification hashigh concentrationlevels in potassium
(19%)and phosphates (12,5%).
2. The VP-Hobe Manure Recycling Procedure requiresa minimumof external additives.
Polymersare used duringseparation, andthroughan advancedfeeding system(developed
andsolely used by VP-Hobe) only a fraction of polymersare required: 0.5Lpolymers/m³pig
manure, comparedto other feeding systems (approximately 50% less).
5. 3. Local water recovery - conditioningof effluents for discharge in surface water.
Intensiveeffluents treatment usingmechanical techniques (reversed osmosis, ionexchange
resin) andbiological cleaning. Water retention in local drainage area instead of sewage
disposal.
The only manurerecycling procedurethat reaches the ammonianorms for water discharge:
less than2mg/l and the requirementsfor heavy metal concentration.
4. Robustsystem, allprocesses, machinery and partsare developedto maximally prevent
congestion.
5. The VP-HobeManureRecycling Procedures doesn’trequire external energy.
The gasification providesthe energy for the evaporation. All processesare designedfor
minimal energy use.
