This document defines and provides examples of prepositions, prepositional phrases, and objects of prepositions. It notes that prepositions relate nouns or pronouns to other words in a sentence and that the noun or pronoun following a preposition is the object. Common prepositions and object pronouns are listed. Examples are given to illustrate prepositional phrases and objects of prepositions.

1. PREPOSITIONS and
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES
• A preposition relates the noun or pronoun that follows it to some
other word in the sentence
• The noun or pronoun that follows a preposition is the object of the
preposition.
• A preposition and its object form a prepositional phrase
– EX: 1. Roger went for a bike ride.
• 2. Students from our school won the race.
• 3. Orion is the largest constellation in the sky.

3. An object of a preposition is a noun or pronoun that follows
a preposition and completes a prepositional phrase.
• EX: 1. Mrs. Severino lives in Philadelphia.
2. Snow fell on the ground yesterday in the city.
3. Please give the paper to him.
