In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?In relation to theories
Andrew Goodwin
Voyeuristic images are used to attract the audience
By reinforcing Andrew Goodwin's theory of voyeuristic images I have developed
the conventions of real media products. I decided to reflect this theory in my
productions because I want my audience to be attracted to my products so it will
then attracts others to watch/look at them. For example I have reflected this in
the particular scene in my music video when the girl looks into the camera and
says ‘I cant do this anymore’ this then makes the audience question what she is
going to do next which means they have to keep watching to find out if she is
okay or not.
Rick Altman
Syntactic Elements
I have decided to challenged Rick Altman’s syntactic elements theory as I have
chosen to create a strong narrative music video which have conventions of a
short film instead of a music video. The main reason behind doing this Is
because I wanted my audience to be sitting on the edge of their seats wanting
to know what happens next. I have been able to achieve this by having one
main theme of communication running through my video, I have achieved this
by reflecting, romance, mobile phones, computers and sign language in my
music video. I have also have three main narratives running through my music
video which also go against the typical conventions of a music video because
they tend to only have one underlying narrative.
Frankfurt School
Hypodermic needle theory
My music video develops the hypodermic needle theory of audiences being
directly influenced by media products. One of the narratives to my music
video is suicide due to bullying, as a result one of my main actors commits
suicide because she cannot cope. From this some audience members who
are being bullied may watch my video and feel that suicide is the only way
out, which is not what I want to achieve as it is not the only way out.
Although I could of decided to end my music video in another way to not
directly influence the audience I chose not to as this narrative reinforces the
lack f communication the girl did and she thought she had to kill herself
however she didn't need to.
Vladimir Propp
Hero /Villain
In my music video I have chosen to portray a villain and hero character however
not make them identifiable. In terms of my hero character decided to use a
young girl in the chorus using sign language, the reason I wanted to use a young
girl is because I don’t think people recognise that it is children too that have to
struggle with communication, particularly with a disability. From portraying sign
language in this way the young girl will definitely be seen as a hero to the
audience because they will be amazed that a young is still able to smile and carry
on with her life. In terms of my villain character I chose to use the girl on the
computer as the villain, although not obvious by using the dissolve transition
whilst editing my music video, this allowed my to slyly blend the picture of the
bully and victim together passing each other, which reflected they did have
communication with each other, but why?
