What Kind Of Media Institution Might
DistributeYour Media Product AndWhy?
■ If our thriller was a real film, we would hope that a larger
company such as Sony Pictures whose contract to co-produce
the next James Bond film “Bond 25” with MGM and Eon (to
be released in 2020) expired so maybe they would be
interested in a different James Bond-like character but
female.
■ The film may also want to be distributed by a company such
as 20th Century Fox who distributed the film “Spy” or by Sony
who distributed James Bond (as of above)
Sony Pictures: Information:
■ Previous spy films: James Bond: - Casino Royale
- Quantum of Solace
- Skyfall
- Spectre
- Men In Black: International (in theatres Summer)
They seem to be consistently distributing the legendary Bond films so if
they could make a successful franchise out of our film like the Bond series,
it could end up being really good for our film. Also, with the new release of
the next Men in Black film coming out, it seems that this is a successful
distribution company for high budget films and do well in the box office
and so they would be a good choice for distribution. They are a high budget
company.
20th Century Fox: Information:
■ Previous spy films: - Red Sparrow
- Kingsman:The Secret Service
- Kingsman:The Golden Circle
They seem to be a good choice for distribution in terms of the kind of
characters that we are working with. A strong female character (red
sparrow) and young spies (Kingsman). They are also seeming to be
targeted at a similar age group to us, and especially a more modern
teenage audience. Therefore, they would also be a great choice since their
aims are similar to what we are aiming to achieve for our film. They are a
high budget company.
Universal Pictures: Information:
■ Previous spy films: -The Bourne Identitiy
-The Bourne Supremacy
-The Bourne Ultimatum
-The Bourne Legacy
- Jason Bourne
- Johnny English
- Johnny English Reborn
- Johnny English Strikes Again
Like with Sony, they seem to have a good success with spy movie franchises and they
seem to do well in both a younger and slightly older audiences so hopefully, with our film,
there would be more of a balance between the two target audiences and a successful
franchise may be able to be made out of our singular film. They are a high budget
company.
Paramount Pictures: Information:
■ Previous spy films: - Mission: Impossible
- Mission: Impossible 2
- Mission: Impossible III
- Mission: ImpossibleGhost Protocol
- Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation
- Mission: Impossible Fallout
- XXX: Return of Xander
- XXX: 4 (TBA)
This is another company that has been successful with not one but two famous spy
franchises so they have experience in distributing and producing spy films so again, they
would be a good choice for our distribution. With more movies on the way, they are still
very active in this genre in the film industry so they would be a useful asset since they
know the industry in this genre so well. They are a high budget company.
Dimension Films: Information:
■ Previous spy films: - Spy Kids
- Spy Kids 2:The Island of Lost Dreams
- Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
- Spy Kids: All theTime in theWorld
This seems to be a less known distribution company. However, they have
done well in a children’s targeted spy film franchise so they may also do
well with a film targeted at an older age group and they may be cheaper to
use since they aren’t as well known. They appear to be a high budget
company but they haven’t made another spy movie in quite a long time so
maybe this isn’t the right company since they aren’t really in with the more
modern, high action spy films of today.
Which one for us?
■ I think that the best distribution company for us would either be
Sony Pictures or 20th Century Fox since they seem to have the right
amount of experience in successful spy films and for a correct age
group (such as Kingsman) and with a higher budget, the rest of our
film could be very high tech and be distributed to lots of cinemas
since these companies take their films straight to cinema after
production.
Audience Of Our Film:
■ Age Group: we were thinking late teens to young adults. A similar age group
as Kingsman as this is the age group where spies are still an interesting topic
but we can use things like guns and a bit of gore without overly scaring the age
group.
■ Where they live: it would probably more attract a western society since the
iconic image of a spy is a western person (such as James Bond being English)
and is often set in western cities and I think that this is probably where our film
is going to be set. Also, spy movies in general tend to appeal to a western
society such as Jason Bourne and James Bond.
■ Hobbies and Interests: Late teenagers still seem to have a fascination with
the idea of spies, guns and action. This is potentially because we are being
more exposed to these kinds of ideas in the news so a natural fascination can
occur. Also, the idea of having a strong, mysterious kind of role model, it
makes them want to be more like them and this can reflect being more active
in school in sports etc.
Audience Of Our Film:
■ Education/Jobs: I don’t think that a job would really affect the audience,
however, I think that someone who has a fairly normal job may like to watch
this film as it satisfies the convention of having a secretive but action filled job
that is unpredictable which I’m assuming will be the opposite of the average
audience member’s job. Same with students since they spend most of their
time working at a desk or writing essays so the idea of having a job like a spy
would be very satisfying.
■ Income: I think that the film would appeal to a fairly similar income group as
James Bond (middle class-upper class) since it would involve glamourous
weaponry and technology like in James Bond which would probably appeal
more to a slightly higher income audience but in terms of teenagers, I don’t
know if it would matter too much as I think that the idea of spies and weapons
would affect their opinions in terms of income.
